Axim Area Holds Maiden Cheiftaincy Seminar

Two hundred and thirty chiefs and royals in Nzemaland participated in the maiden Cheiftaincy seminar organised by the Axim Area of The Church of Pentecost.

The programme took place on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the Nzema Manle Community Centre near Esiama in the Ellembelle District in the Western Region of Ghana.

Held under the leadership of the Area Head, Apostle Daniel Mireku Gyamera, the seminar aimed at bridging the gap between the Chieftaincy institution and the Church.

The seminar was graced by the National Cheiftaincy Ministry Coordinator, Apostle Vincent Anane Denteh, who also serves as an Executive Council Member and the Director of the Men’s Ministry of The Church of Pentecost.

Espousing the mission and the vision statements of the Chieftaincy Ministry of The Church of Pentecost to the participants, Apostle Vincent Anane Denteh noted that the ministry has a mission to reach out to royals for Christ to transform society and also equip Christian royals with godly virtues, Kingdom values and principles, to influence their communities.

He highlighted integrity, fairness, justice honesty, faithfulness and loyalty, among others as virtues that need to be embraced by royals and stakeholders to propel and facilitate the achievement of the mission, vision and objectives of the ministry.

The National Coordinator further stated that traditional leadership is a unique institution and the church needs to understand its traditional principles to make maximum impact in the palace.

In his view, there is a need to create synergy between the Church and the palace as they both work together to address the problems of society.

The evolution of chieftaincy in Ghana was another area the National Coordinator shed light on.

He explained that the Chieftaincy institution for decades has moved from unstructured to structured, with the Mole-Dagbon kingdom as the pioneer of this drive.

According to him, the development of African societies largely depends on the leadership of the chiefs; acting as captains during wars, rescuing their people, enforcing unity, law and order, and consolidating these developments in their jurisdictions.

Apostle Anane Denteh also succinctly talked about the symbols of authority in Ghanaian chiefdom, where he revealed that the stool and the skin symbolises the soul of the community, unity, and divine leadership, among others.

The sword, he noted, is a symbol of strength and power, whilst the drum is a medium of communication and musical instrument, adding that the type of the drum depicts the ethnic identity of the people.

Apostle Anane Denteh further submitted that chiefs possess authority, yet they acknowledge the supreme authority of God.

“Conviction without conversion is dangerous. Given this, chiefs and royals must be guided on the right approach to God,” he advised.

Apostle Vincent Anane Denteh touched on the legal aspects of Chieftaincy in Ghana regarding Act 270 of the 1992 Constitution and Chieftaincy Act 759 (2008) which establishes and regulates the institution and conduct of chiefs.

He stressed that, according to the constitutional provision, Chiefs are not to take part in active (partisan) politics and that anyone who desires to do so must abdicate his throne. He, however, clarified that the laws of the country allow for a chief to be appointed to any public office for which he qualifies.

Apostle Daniel Mireku Gyamera also addressed the gathering during the event.

Reading from 2 Chronicles 17:3-13, he posited that God established the kingdom of King Jehoshaphat and made Judah prosper under his kingship because he received the law of God and also appointed priests and godly people to teach the law of God throughout the kingdom of Judah.

This, he said, was because Jehoshaphat was obedient to God and very committed to Him.

“He allowed the law of God to transform his kingdom by not continuing in the sins of his fathers but committed his life to the most high God,” he said.

The Axim Area Head, therefore, advised the chiefs and royals to open their palaces and communities to Jesus and also embrace the gospel themselves for God to establish their kingdoms and prosper their jurisdictions during their reign.

“When you this, the Lord Himself will protect and deliver you from every spiritual attack and make your name great on the land,” he assured.

In turn, Nana Kofi Bonya VI, Chief of Baseke and a National Executive Committee member of the Chieftaincy Ministry, also advised traditional leaders to see ministers as development partners, urging that some communal activities should be channelled through the church.

He observed that, in contemporary times, people are loyal to their religion or faith and tend to listen to their religious leaders more than the traditional leaders.

There is therefore the need to bridge the gap between the palace and the church for community development, he added.

On behalf of the participants, Awulae Agyefi Kwame II, the Paramount Chief of Lower Town Axim and Nsein Traditional Area, expressed deep appreciation to the church for its swift response to the plights of chiefs.

He also said the Church should not relent from visiting their  palaces, saying: “We also want to make it to heaven.”

Awulae Agyefi encouraged the royals and traditional leaders to engage the ministers and Church leaders for their inputs and opinions regarding the development of their jurisdictions.

Apostle Daniel Mireku Gyamera, then, led all the ministers present to pray for the chiefs and royals for divine protection and for their hearts to be opened to the gospel.

In attendance were prominent chiefs and royals from the various traditional areas in the Nzema land and the Axim Area pastorate, including Pastor Francis K. Amewondey, a National Executive Committee Member of the Cheiftaincy Ministry and the Axim Area Chieftaincy Ministry Coordinator.

Also present were Mrs. Martha Denteh (Wife of the National Coordinator) and Mrs. Evelyn Selasi Mireku Gyamerah (Wife of the Axim Area Head).

“If marriage is a calling, then it is a call to fulfill God’s purpose,” he said.

According to him, marriage is God’s method to; reveal the mystical union of Christ with His church to the world (Ephesians 5:31-32), illustrate His love which transcends all things to the world (Romans 5:8), populate the earth with spirit-filled, spirit led God-fearing people (Matthew 5:13-14), establish His kingdom here on earth (Titus 2:7-10) and see to it that His divine will is done here on earth (Ephesians 3:10).

He concluded on the note that “for God and the responsibilities in marriage, marriage must be viewed, accepted and entered into with the understanding that one is called to serve in it.”

The gift of salvation that Christ offers is available to all who believe and accept Him as Lord and personal Saviour.

You can also do the same by saying this simple prayer:

“Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe you died for my sins and rose from the dead for my justification. I turn from my sins and invite you to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow you as my Lord and Saviour.”

If you have sincerely said this prayer, then you are Born Again. Please find any branch of The Church of Pentecost nearby or any Bible-believing church to learn more about your newfound faith.

Winneba Area Organises Retreat For Pastorate & Wives

Apostle Daniel Nii Tetteh Tackie, the Winneba Area Head of The Church of Pentecost, has organised a one-day retreat for the Area pastorate and their wives.

During the event held at the Ansaful Central Assembly auditorium, Apostle Tackie delivered a sermon titled, “Live or Re-live the Pages of Acts of the Apostles: A Clarion Call for All Ministers,” inspired by a profound statement made by the Chairman of the Church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, at the recently held Heads’ meeting.

In his message, he emphasised the significance of the Acts of the Apostles, highlighting their portrayal of the early church’s inception and astonishing journey.

He underscored the theme of availing oneself to God, drawing parallels to the Early Church’s unleashing of power.

Delving into key insights, the Winneba Area Head noted the importance of moving with power, drawing inspiration from the dynamic nature of the Early Church.

He explored the perceived gap between the Early Church and the present, attributing it to a diminishing commitment among believers.

Addressing internal conflicts, he drew parallels with the Early Church’s resolution of issues, emphasizing the need for power and endurance to propel the church forward.

He indicated the role of the Holy Spirit in unleashing the church, marked by flames, wind, and miracles, with poignant relevance in the present time.

Apostle Tackie also distinguished between Jesus’ assurance of disciples’ clothing with power in Luke 24:45–49 and the Acts 1:8 experience, shedding light on the nuanced nature of divine empowerment.

The Holy Spirit’s multifaceted empowerment for witness, glorifying God, and providing supernatural power for Christ’s church recurred in his sermon, illustrated through passages like Acts 3:7–10 and Acts 4.

Drawing upon Paul’s insights in Romans 16:25–27, the Winneba Area Head noted that believers, by virtue of their unlimited access to God through Christ, have a unique advantage over challenges.

Apostle Tackie concluded by urging believers to open up to God’s establishment, likening it to being on “steroids,” signifying an advantage to overcome everything, including challenges posed by the devil.

Apostle Tackie, afterwards, outlined Vision 2028, which seeks to unleash the whole church to transform worldviews, thoughts, and behavior with the values, principles, and lifestyles of the kingdom of God, leading many to Christ.

He also threw more light on the 2024 theme, “A People of God Unleashed to transform their world” (1 Peter 2:9; Acts 1:8), and also shared with the participants the official slogans for the new strategic vision of the Church.

COME, CHOOSE CHRIST - POEM web

One-Week Observation For The Dead: A Menace Or A Missing Link?

One of the downsides of humanity’s existence is mourning. It is not a pleasant experience when it happens to an individual or a group. Perhaps, the height of mourning is when the life of a dear one is lost. In various societies, the rite of passage for the dead into the afterlife could be from sheer elaborate extravagance or pauper privation to depict the extent of pain. Funerals date back into antiquity. In the biblical narratives, we encounter funerals such as that of Jacob running into days in the Old Testament and processions of mourners encountered by Jesus and that of Dorcas in the New Testament.

In Ghanaian society, funerals serve not only as a time to mourn the departed but also as a time for reflection on life and its meaning, socialisation, reunions, and even the settlement of protracted disputes or contracting of marriages in memory of the deceased. Funerals also come with an economy of their own, from caterers, undertakers, pallbearers, spinners, coffin makers, providers of canopies, and chairs, among others. It is no surprise that there is a discussion in the policy sector to consider putting how funerals are observed in Ghana on the tourism map.

Unfortunately, the economic and social benefits of funerals have been hyped to the extent that organising funerals in Ghana has become a whole burden that makes people grieve over the cost more than grieving the loss of life. It is documented that some people who wail uncontrollably when they hear of the demise of a loved one are not just mourning the life gone but also contemplating how to come by resources to organise huge funerals in their memory. It is as if when the funeral does not meet the expectations of attendees, then you have failed to eulogise the dead as it should be, and at times people have been accused of being happy they have lost a loved one because they failed to spend so much on their funerals. It is this sad narrative that has gradually pushed Ghanaian society, especially southern Ghana, into another monster that needs to be quickly checked – one-week observation.

Traditionally, the one week was observed by close kin of the deceased. It has a historical origin from the times when orthodox medicine was not advanced, and the dead were preserved at home for a week just to be sure they were not in a coma or just collapsed. After a week, the family was sure to announce the person as dead, hence the nomenclature ‘One Week Observation’. It was to observe a week after the passing of the individual. It was at this time that the head of the family (abusua panyin) met with the close-knit group of those who matter in the family to deliberate on when to observe the funeral of the deceased. It was a solemn and pensive occasion held away from public view, and not every family member was allowed to attend.

It therefore beats the imagination how this has been turned into another albatross around the neck of society and how it is gradually getting to suffocate the living. Three things bewilder me about the observation of one week for the deceased as it is currently practiced. First, the one-week celebration has been turned into a mini-funeral, a kind of pre-funeral rehearsal where people are invited to come mourn the dead. I have observed with concern one-week observations where the only thing that showed it was not the main funeral was that the corpse was missing in action. Everything that was to be done at the main funeral was performed at the one-week observation. I wondered what else was to be done at the main funeral after all this extravagance and pageantry.

Another concern is that the ‘one week’ has been turned into one month, two months, six months after the death of the person. One is just left without words as to what accounts for that and what is the significance of the occasion any longer. At times, before the ‘one week’ held many weeks after the incidence of death, the date for the main funeral, which is the main reason for the observation, is already known to anyone who cares to know. Why then is the ‘one week’ still held? In fact, why is it still called ‘one-week observation’ when it is being held after one week of the demise?

The one that hit me hard was when a widower was compelled to organise the one week of his late wife an hour away from the same day the main funeral was held. What else could be so devastating for someone who has lost his dear wife than to hold two ‘funerals’ for the deceased the same day at the same venue? What is the essence?

My third concern is how gradually, an observation meant for the close-knit family has been made a ‘compulsion’ for all, and gradually the church is being coerced into officially getting involved. An event not meant for the public is gradually being forced down the throats of everyone. People even call to accuse friends, church members, and pastors for not attending the one-week observation of the passing of a deceased. It has got to the point where church buildings, instruments, chairs, and canopies are requested to be used for such events. These requests are made again during the main funeral. What else can be so stressful for church leaders than this? To refuse is to be tagged unsympathetic, a culture-mix fit, apathetic, etc.

It is about time our traditional leaders, family heads, and the church responded to this situation to curtail it from blowing up into something else beyond the menace it is becoming or has become now. In times past, when wake-keeping, another practice that lost its significance in the face of modernity and advancement in science, threatened our sanity, some chiefs and church leaders quickly responded to the threat, and we have a modicum of sanity prevailing now on the issue of wake-keeping. I believe we are presented again with a time to show leadership again. Let’s mourn the dead without burdening the living unnecessarily. Or could there be a meaningful missing link I and others who are concerned have missed in the contemporary one-week observation?
