Profile

Rev. Dr. Gordon Kisseih responded to the call to enter full-time ministry in 1987. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) from the KNUST, Kumasi, and a Master of Education (MA) from Oral Roberts University, Tulsa Oklahoma (USA), where he is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Dr. Kisseih is the President of Life International Schools, that is a Senior High School (Life International College), a Foundation School (from Creche to Junior High), and Life Bible College.

Sermon

Apostle Eric Nyamekye, delivering the sermon on the topic, “Understanding the Church,” stated that “the church’s foundation is one and the church is one. No one denomination has the truth. The truth is in Christ, who is the truth; what we hold are truths about the Truth.

He disclosed that the main thing that Apostle Paul had to contend with was the issue of circumcision, that is whether the Gentiles turning to Christ should be circumcised or not. He noted that the Pharisees found it a big issue because it gave them an identity in Christ.

He, however, said that the mystery of Christ was made known to him which changed his perception while quoting Ephesians 3:6.

He stated: “Denominations may be good but they should not be blocs that divide us. I believe that no one denomination is exclusive of a particular channel of God’s grace. The things are equally distributed among all denominations, and the degree to which God uses a fellow is determined not by the denomination in which he or she is located, but by the depth of his surrender to God, regardless of where he or she worships.”

He urged Christians to stay in unity and entreated them to make the church a strong organisation that focuses on eternal life.

Inductee Response

In his response, Rev. Dr. Kisseih expressed his utmost gratitude to God and the leadership of the Council for entrusting him with this higher calling. He thanked the various leaders of denominations who graced the occasion to support him.

He charged the clergy to be involved in national issues since the church is the solution for all the crises being faced by the world.

Present at the service was His Lordship Justice Eric Kyei Barffour, an Appeal Court Judge who represented the former Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Georgina Theodora Woode (Rtd).

Also present was Apostle Ekow Badu-Woode (retired), a former General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council and former Kasoa Area Head of The Church of Pentecost.

Goaso Area Office Complex Dedicated

An office complex of the Goaso Area of The Church of Pentecost, located at Goaso-Krofrom, has been dedicated by the Chairman of the church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.

The Chairman was assisted by the Goaso Area Head, Apostle William Kojo Edzorhoho, and some heads within the Ahafo, Bono and Bono East regions. Among them were the Tepa Area Head, Pastor Daniel Frimpong-Manso; Berekum Area Head, Apostle Samuel Berko, and the Acting Techiman Area Head, Apostle Julius Franklin Asante-Ayeh (Retired).

The Omanhene of the Goaso Traditional Area, Nana Akwasi Bosomprah I, and his sub-chiefs also graced the occasion.

The two-storey edifice comprises offices for the Area head and his administrative staff, a conference room (currently serving as an auditorium for PIWC Goaso), washrooms, offices for the Pentecost Co-operative Mutual Support and Social Services Society Ltd (PENCO), and stores.

Speaking at the dedication service, Apostle Nyamekye mentioned that believers receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit the day we receive Jesus as Lord and Saviour, saying, “So as Paul was anointed, we have been anointed too.”

He spoke on the topic, “Building the Church to Be Strong, to Last and Spread” (2 Corinthians 1:21 and Luke 4:18), Apostle Nyamekye stated: “The anointing of God upon us is for a particular purpose. God needs your availability to activate it.”

He added: “God anointed us to help us build and advance the kingdom of God and we need to be careful how we build it.”

Reflecting on Nehemiah 4:13, Apostle Nyamekye outlined that Tobiah cautioned the Israelites to be careful of the structural integrity of the building. He, therefore, admonished Christian leaders to be careful of how they build when building the church of God.

He further urged leaders to build a church that will be strong, powerful, stand the test of time and spread across the nations.

According to him, many Christians reflect on the activities of witches who have less power, while having the power of God in them. He, therefore, charged them to focus on the power of God because they are strong.

Addressing the congregation, the Paramount Chief of Goaso Traditional Area, Nana Akwasi Bosomprah I, admonished Christian traders to desist from exorbitantly increasing their produce on the market, saying, “Despite the difficulties in the nation, be an agent of change in the marketplace for you are a priest.”

The Goaso Area Office Complex was the brainchild of the then Area Head, Prophet Appiah Adu (now retired) in 2008, after the Goaso District Mission House was pulled down. Subsequent Area Heads in 2012 and 2014, namely Apostle A. E. K. Ekuban (now retired) and Apostle I. K. Amoako (now retired), respectively commenced the construction of the project.

Apostle William Kojo Edzorhoho, upon taking over accelerated the work on the building and reengineered certain portions of the office. The entire project which cost an amount of GH₵696,705.00, was supervised voluntarily by Mr. Amoako Atta, the former Goaso Municipal Assembly Works Engineer.

Officers Are Key Stakeholders Of The Church – Chairman Observes

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has observed that officers of the church are one of the key stakeholder groups in building the church of God.

Addressing members of the church at the Goaso Central Assembly auditorium as part of his working visit to the Goaso Area, the Chairman indicated that officers steer the affairs of the church in the locals, especially in the absence of ministers.

He commended their efforts in contributing to the faster growth and development of The Church of Pentecost.

Reading from Colossians 3:23-24, Apostle Nyamekye admonished officers of the church to continue working heartily as whatever they do is for the glorification of Christ.

“Worship God with all your heart and resources for you will be rewarded accordingly as you serve,” the Chairman stated.

He further stressed that to possess the nation as a church, it is imperative for members to live in righteousness. He also urged them to be agents of transformation in their various spheres of work in society.

Apostle Nyamekye Pays Courtesy Call On Goaso Paramount Chief

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of the Goaso Traditional Area, Nana Akwasi Bosomprah I, to begin his 4-day working tour of the Ahafo Region.

He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Mary Nyamekye, the Goaso Area Head of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle William Kojo Edzorhoho, and the Goaso Area Pastorate.

Addressing the delegation, Nana Akwasi Bosomprah expressed his excitement about the establishment of the Chieftaincy Ministry in the church. The leadership of the church, he said, deserves many commendations, saying, “I am happy about the fact that royals and chiefs come together to learn about Christ.”

The Omanhene, however, lamented about the increase of false doctrines by some churches and charlatans who called themselves God.

He called on officials of Bible training institutions to scrutinize persons they admit into their institutions to ensure that the right people come out as pastors.

He disclosed that through his love and passion for Christ, he organised Goaso for Christ and Ahafo for Christ crusades, which drew many chiefs from far and near to participate.

Celebrating 15 years of enstoolment next year, the Betwahene of Asantehene Otumfuo called on The Church of Pentecost to build a Royals Assembly, where it would be designated to only chiefs and royals to worship without joining the mainstream services. He, therefore, donated two plots of land to the church for the commencement of the project.

In his response, Apostle Eric Nyamekye stated: “We thank God that today we have chiefs who understand Christ and yearn to use these instructions to rule the lands. Our ancestors used what they knew, and the light has come in this dispensation. Therefore, it is worth using the Bible as your manual.”

Chairman Nyamekye added: “I believe that chieftaincy, priesthood and governance are all forms of leadership. God created man to rule over the people. To lead the people, we need leaders to fulfill this mandate. Chieftaincy is not idol worship.”

Concerning the request to build a separate church for chiefs, Apostle Nyamekye assured Nana Bosomprah of the church’s commitment to the construction of the Royals Assembly church building. He also revealed that plans are far advanced for the construction of a Royals Leadership & Resource Centre at Akwapim-Akropong, which would be used for educating chiefs.

He, then expressed his sincere appreciation to the Paramount Chief for the kind gesture and support towards the church within the Area.

Present were the Queen mother of the Goaso Traditional Area, Nana Afia Serwaa, and members of the traditional council.

Involve Everyone In Your Leadership – Apostle Nyamekye To Christian Leaders

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye has noted that for Christian leaders to succeed in their leadership, they must endeavour to include everyone no matter how difficult they may appear to be.

“It does not matter how intellectually smart or genius the leader may be, you cannot succeed as you are. We all need people to win,” Apostle Nyamekye said.

Apostle Nyamekye made this passionate call on Friday, October 21, 2022, at the Emmanuel Mensah Chapel of the Full Gospel Church International (FGCI), Tema Community 1, during their 21st General Council Meetings.

Addressing the gathering as the Guest Speaker, Apostle Nyamekye spoke on the theme: “Let Us Rise Up And Build.”

According to him, the church is a community of holy people walking in love and advancing into the world with the gospel of salvation.

He added that the church should not only be envisioned as the building in which people worship or meet, rather it should be a holy community walking in love.

Making reference from Nehemiah 2:18, he asserted that leadership is about growth, building and development and not about influence. He, therefore, charged Christian leaders to rise and build than destroy what already exists.

Quoting from John Haggai, Apostle Nyamekye stated that, “Leadership is the discipline of exerting a special influence within a group to move it toward permanent beneficial goals that fulfill the group’s real needs.”

He further advised that in leading, one does not force people but motivate them.

The 2nd Vice President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), however, lamented that leaders today concentrated on their wellbeing than that of their people, saying, “The focus of leadership is about the people’s well-being. Our mandate as ministers is the church and not the individual leader.”

Apostle Nyamekye also admonished that leadership is a responsibility and not wealth, fame, power, showmanship or making their enemies fear them and their friends admire them.

“There is no need to reassure people about the elevation that comes with the position by lauding over them. Relax and have the ability to respond to them,” he stated.

He encouraged leaders to be concerned about the future generations because humans expire, no generation possibly finishes the work because every day new sinners are born into this planet; and every generation comes with its own challenges and it takes the people of the same generation to deal with the challenges.

“Let us not rejoice in the difficulties facing the nation, since when the nation is destroyed, we all will suffer,” he concluded leading the clergy to offer prayers for the nation.

Gracing the occasion was the Municipal Chief Executive of Tema, Hon. Yohane Amorh Ashitey.

Present were Most Rev. Samuel Noi Mensah (Chairman of Board of Trustees, FGCI), Bishop Dela Fiagome (President, FGCI), and Rev. Theophilus Mangesi (General Secretary, FGCI).

Also, present were Mrs Mary Nyamekye (wife of the Chairman), Apostle Emmanuel Ofei Ankra-Badu (Tema Area Head, CoP), and Pastor Samuel Koomson (PIWC Tema).

Director-General Of Prisons Lauds The Church of Pentecost

The Director-General of Ghana Prisons Service, Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir, has lauded The Church of Pentecost for its tremendous support to the service over the years, especially with the interventions of building prison reformation centres across the nation.

According to the Director-General, the Nsawam Prison Reformation Centre, a 320-bed capacity facility, is the second among the five modern centres (Ejura, Nsawam, Damango, Obuasi, and Enchi) being built in Ghana by the Church in partnership with the Prisons Service.

He made this commendation in his welcome address during the commissioning of the Nsawam Prison Reformation Centre located at Ahodwo within the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality, Eastern Region on Saturday, October 22, 2022.

Mr. Egyir disclosed that the persistent quest of the Prisons Service in tackling issues of congestion over the years bore further fruits in 2017, after an engagement with Apostle Eric Nyamekye, the Chairman of the church.

“The call for support from The Church of Pentecost in addressing this age-long problem was born out of a desire by the Prisons Administration by the time to complement government efforts by reaching out to corporate groups, faith-based organisations, and individuals to support,” he said, reiterating that monumental among the contributions was that of the church.

The Director-General indicated that beyond decongesting the prisons through the establishment of camp prisons throughout the country, lies also the inherent advantage of expanding prison agriculture and imparting various artisanal skills to the inmates.

He stressed that the camp prisons have been deliberately sited in areas having vast arable lands, saying, “The intention is to afford inmates the opportunity to learn themselves to farming as a vocation while producing food to supplement their feeding and provide the opportunity for skill acquisition for areas of carpentry, tailoring, and ICT.”

He, therefore, called on other corporate groups to partner and emulate the kind gesture of the church by supporting the various initiatives rolled out by the Prisons Service, especially the mechanization of agriculture.

President Akufo Addo Commends The Church Of Pentecost For Exceptional Leadership

“The Church of Pentecost, by what it has done here [at Nsawam], has demonstrated exceptional leadership in its desire to maintain and grow a partnership with the state to address the problems of our nation.”

These were the words of the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo when commissioning the Nsawam Reformation Prison Centre, at Ahodwo in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality last Saturday.

According to the President, the gesture by the church was “a very important example of the collaboration that the state seeks in this country, between government and several stakeholders that is, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and independent institutions in our nation.”

In his address, President Akufo-Addo recalled the collaboration between the church and the state during the COVID-19 era, where the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC), a state-of-the-art facility of The Church of Pentecost, was made available to the government as a quarantine centre for Covid patients, coupled with the distribution of food items by the church to the needy in various parts of the country.

He commended The Church of Pentecost for this exceptional initiative that helped save and solved the situation during that period.

“It shows the commitment of this church towards contributing to resolving the socio-economic problems of our nation,” he stated.

The President further iterated that the church’s prisons interventions are initiatives that will help develop the skills and talents of inmates of the country’s prisons, and provide educational opportunities for them, saying, “We know that today, the prison is not just a place of correction and punishment but it is meant to be a place of rehabilitation and reformation.”

He also stressed that congestion in prisons is one of the major burdens of prison administrations all over the world. He, therefore, said that to have a church put this as its priority to decongest and ease the accommodation of the prison is a major service to the nation.

The President of Ghana, however, hinted that the expansion of the Nsawam Medium Security Remand Prison by his administration was about 70 percent complete, and would be operational by the end of the year.

He called on various stakeholders and private agencies that have interest in the industrialisation of agriculture in the country to support the Ghana Prisons Service’s agriculture project.

The Church Of Pentecost Builds Prison Reformation Centre

The Church of Pentecost has built an Inmates Skills Acquisition and Reformation Centre at Nsawam in the Eastern Region of Ghana as a move to reform prisoners to become useful and integrate them into society.

The 320 capacity fully-furnished facility, which was handed over to the Ghana Prisons Service at a ceremony at Ahodwo in the Nsawam-Adoagyire Municipality today Saturday, October 22, 2022, has four dormitories, an infirmary, a visitors lounge with a shop, a fully furnished administration block with auxiliary offices, an ICT lab with computers and accessories, a tailoring workshop, a carpentry workshop, a chapel fully furnished with musical instruments, baptistry, kitchen with a dining hall, soccer pitch, and volleyball pitch, CCTV Installations, and other facilities.

The Nsawam Prison Reformation Centre is the second to be built by the church, after constructing a similar one at Ejura in the Ashanti Region in May 2021. The construction of the all-male correctional centre began two years ago. The project was supervised by the Projects Development and Estate Department of The Church of Pentecost General Headquarters. Currently, two of such facilities are at various stages of completion at Damongo and Obuasi in the Savannah and Ashanti regions, respectively.

Commissioning the facility, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, highly commended The Church of Pentecost and the Chairman of the Church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, for his sterling leadership.

“I can say with confidence that the commissioning of this prison facility is the high point of my working visit to the Eastern Region,” he said.

He added: “The Church of Pentecost is demonstrating exceptional leadership in its desire to develop this country through social intervention projects such as the reformation and congestion of the prisons.”

According to the President, this collaboration between the church and the government was also seen at the height of COVID-19 when the church donated its facility at Gomoa Feteh to Government as a holding centre for Covid patients.

“It shows the commitment of this church towards contributing to the development of this nation. All Ghanaians should join me to say, Ayekoo to the Church,” he stated.

In his address, the Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, said “as Christians, we believe we must not only lead and usher people to Heaven but also show interest in their livelihoods here on earth by making them useful to society. It is for this reason that together with the Ghana Prisons Service, this facility has been christened, Inmates Skills Acquisition and Reformation Centre.”

According to him, overcrowding is one key contributing factor to poor prison conditions in Ghana and other parts of the world, disclosing that, as of October 2022, there was a total of 14,957 inmates in Ghana’s prisons, as against the maximum capacity of 9,850.

He further disclosed that the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons which was built to hold a total of 850 prisoners, is currently holding 3,187 prisoners, representing over 275% above the required capacity.

“Being aware of this reality, The Church of Pentecost took the initiative to partner the Ghana Prisons Service to decongest Ghanaian prisons and provide better living conditions for prison inmates,” Apostle Nyamekye stated.

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost further stated that the Prison Reformation Centre is a direct response to the Bible’s admonishing in Hebrews 13:3 which states: “Continue to remember those in prison, as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated, as if you yourselves were suffering.”

Apostle Nyamekye hinted that the Ejura Prison Camp project constructed last year by the church is already yielding some dividends. Currently, thirty-six (36) inmates, he noted, are being trained in different trades (Tailoring, Kente Weaving, Leatherworks, Carpentry, and Metalworks).  A good number of the inmates, he added, have already been trained at the workshop and have since been discharged.

“Moreover, forty (40) inmates have been enrolled on a non-formal or literacy education which began in August this year. Many of the inmates are turning a new page in their lives by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal saviour,” he expressed in joy.

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost further stated that in a bid to further assist the Prisons Service to decongest the prisons, the Church beginning from this year, embarked on an annual release of some prisoners with default warrant, by paying for the fines owed.

This year, he said payment has been made for a total of 42 prisoners from the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Nsawam Female Prison, Ho Central Prison, and the James Camp Prison. The Church, he added, intends to re-orientate these prisoners to fashion out the right attitude to civil life and assist them with the needed initial support to re-start life in order to be socially reintegrated in society, saying, “For us sinners are our clients.”

Apart from the prison facilities, The Church of Pentecost is also building police stations in some communities across the country to enhance security in those places, and also providing potable drinking water in some selected deprived communities in the country, among other initiatives. A Police Station and a 20-bed capacity health facility are also ready for commissioning at Kawampe and Abesewa in the Savannah and Ashanti regions respectively.

22 Reviewed Members Of Boards & Committees Honoured

As per the white paper of The Church of Pentecost during the 17thExtraordinary Council Meetings in May this year, 22 members of boards and committees in the church were reviewed after serving meritoriously over a period of years.

A short appreciation ceremony was held yesterday [Tuesday, October 18, 2022] at the Church’s General Headquarters, at La, in Accra to honour and appreciate their long service in the church.

In a brief address, the Chairman of the church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye on behalf of the Executive Council expressed his profound appreciation to the past members of the various boards and committees and acknowledged their tremendous efforts and contributions made in the success of the church.

“Life is full of changing scenes and so far as the earth is concerned, generations will come for generational leaders to be changed. It is all in the interest of the work,” Apostle Nyamekye said.

According to the Chairman, after much prayer and deliberations are done, a section of leaders is considered to fill in various places in the church where they support the overall vision of the leadership.

However, he noted that since those chosen are lay ministers and a few ministers, much burden is laid on them. Therefore, reviews become necessary to allow others continue or end, granting the opportunity for others to help too.

Reading from 1 Chronicles 9:9-10, Apostle Nyamekye revealed that King David did not succeed in his reign over Israel not only because God was with him but the chiefs of his mighty warriors together with the whole of Israel gave his kingship strong support to extent it over the whole land as the Lord promised.

“We want to say that The Church of Pentecost is so much spread across the whole world today. We are being talked about positively because behind the leaders, you gave us strong support,” he said, stating, “A lot of people think we just pray but they do not know the number of meetings and the support systems that we have at each stage of administration.”

Apostle Nyamekye then indicated that members who hold positions in the church or serve in various capacities are not reviewed and changed because they do not perform well, but rather to allow others to come on board to help.

The General Secretary, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi on behalf of the Chairman presented them with plaques and tokens to appreciate their servitude to the church.

Among those reviewed were the Pentecost Hospital Board (Apostle Lawrence Otu-Nyarko who served for 2 years); Music Committee (Elder Dr Emmanuel Kwasi Mireku who served 26 years and Mrs. Margaret Darko Ankomah who served for 8 years); Pentecost Convention Centre (Prophet James Osei Amoaniampong Rtd. who served for 9 years, Pastor Ben Akuetteh Noye who served for 2 years, Elder Joseph Kofi Amankwah, who served for 3 years, and Deaconess Angela Peasah, who served for 9 years); National Discipleship & Leadership Development Committee (Apostle Vincent Anane Denteh, who served for 4 years, and Apostle William Boakye Agyarko, who served for 4 years).

Others are Pension Board (Apostle David Tettey Tekper, who served for 8 years and Elder Samuel Antwi, who served for 8 years); Ministerial Committee (Prophet James Osei Amaniampong Rtd., who served for 5 years and Prophet Ebenezer Kofi Appiah, who served for 5 years); and Finance Board (Apostle Samuel Gyau Obuobi, who served for 8 years and Elder Elisha Asiedu Amponsah, who served for 18 years).

The rest, are PENSA International Coordinating Committee (Pastor Franklin Kumi Lartey, who served for 3 years, Pastor Daniel Nana Sei Mensah, who served for 3 years, Elder Stepheny Finjap Wanji, who served for 3 years, Dr Olugbenga Samson Onile, who served for 3 years, Elder Dr. Kloutse Kodjo Biava, who served for 3 years, and Elder Dr. Emmanuel Duah, who served for 3 years.), and Youth Ministry-NEC (Pastor Godwin Ako-Addo, who served for 4 years and Pastor Ebenezer Agyapong, who served for 2 years).

Giving a response on behalf of the awardees, Apostle David Tettey Tekper, the Achimota Area Head stated that, “We are grateful that it pleased the Lord to lay His hands on us to serve in various capacities in building the Kingdom. All that we did was to the service of the Lord and we are grateful to the Executive Council.”

The Executive Council Member lauded the leadership of the church led by the Chairman for their thoughtfulness in acknowledging their support to the structures, and assured of their readiness to respond to the call of service anytime.

Present was the International Missions Director (IMD), Apostle Emmanuel Agyemang Bekoe, and some Heads of Department at the General Headquarters.

Church Leaders Tour Galamsey Sites

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost and 2nd Vice Chairman of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Eric Nyamekye, yesterday joined a delegation of church leaders in Ghana on a fact-finding tour to some illegal mining (Galamsey) sites in the country.

The tour was meant to observe at firsthand the level of devastation perpetrated by the galamsey operators.

Among the church delegation was Bishop Dr Paul Boafo (Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana and immediate-past Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana), and Rev. Prof. Paul Frimpong Manso (President, GPCC).

The others were Rev. Cyril Fayose (General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana), Apostle A.N.Y. Kumi-Larbi (General Secretary, The Church of Pentecost), Apostle Eric Kingsley Darko (Vice President, Council for Independent Churches) and Apostle Samuel Antwi (Executive Council Member of The Church of Pentecost and Former GPCC General Secretary).

The delegation also included ministers from The Church of Pentecost, Apostolic Church- Ghana and the Deeper Life Bible Church.

“The Beauty of Nature”

As part of the tour, the team made a quick stop at Boadua to pay a courtesy call on Osabarima Oware Asare Pronko III, the Chief of Apinamang, one of the towns in the Eastern Region of Ghana adversely affected by the activities of illegal mining.

Nana Asare Pronko, a passionate environmentalist, and his elders received the team at his eco-tourism resort and wildlife reserve, which he had deliberately (albeit ironical) named “The Beauty of Nature.”

The chief admitted that illegal mining is prevalent in his community and lamented about how the non-scientific approach of the miners is destroying vegetation and waterbodies.

“They do not even fill the mining pits after they are done, and this makes it difficult to reclaim the land for productive use. I have done everything but to no avail. I am now helpless!” he said.

The chief commended the religious leaders for undertaking a good initiative to help in the fight against galamsey and advised them not to allow anyone to discourage or intimidate them. He also pledged his support towards fighting the environmental menace.

“Why should we allow this (illegal mining) to go on? If other chiefs are part of it then not me – I refuse to be part of this!” he said.

Nana Pronko also gave the team a tour around his ecotourism park and touted his personal efforts in preserving the environment for posterity.

Apinamang Galamsey Site

At Apinamang, the delegation visited an active illegal mining site where they were met with abandoned pits, muddy water (polluted) and destroyed cocoa farm lands. The sorry state of the land and sheer level of devastation ignited deep emotions from the team who soon began to sing patriotic songs.

Addressing the press, Bishop Dr. Paul Boafo reminded Christians in Ghana about the duty they have to take care of God’s creation and ensure that people living on the earth prosper.

He called on all stakeholders (chiefs, government, church, institution etc.) to come on board in order to seek a non-partisan and lasting solution to the galamsey endemic.

“This is a collective fight, and all Ghanaians should come on board and let’s fight galamsey. We need to adopt a non-partisan approach in dealing with this problem, just as we did with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rev. Paul Frimpong, on his part, called on all responsible governmental agencies to rise and act in order to save the dire situation.

“My heart is burning. This is an absolute disaster and disgrace to the country. We must not entertain any political party that supports galamsey,” he said.

Father Dieudonne Davor, who represented the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, at the tour, said that the alarming rate of the destruction calls for an urgent action, and therefore, reiterated that government must not relent in its effort to clamp down on the activities of illegal miners.

Dr. George Manful, an environmentalist, retired diplomat and Environmental advisor to the Assemblies of God Church, expressed disbelief at the unimaginable proportions of destruction caused by the activities of illegal miners, describing it as “environmental rape.”

“I have followed the issue of galamsey for quite a long time. Formerly, the perpetuators used to mine with pickaxes, now they are using excavators! This tells how much the practice has escalated,” he said.

“A Complex Problem”

Apostle Eric Nyamekye bemoaned the lack of political will in the fight against the galamsey threat.

“We have all the environmental laws on paper, what we lack is the will to enforce them. Leaders must lead, they must enforce laws otherwise human beings, by their nature, will always go way ward,” he stated.

He said that the complex nature of the issue calls for a multifaceted approach in coming up with an effective intervention to address illegal mining in the country.

He, however, stated that “Galamsey is a human problem so human beings can solve it. We should not leave to the politicians; all stakeholders must come together to fix it.

Mother of five loses her land

The delegation ended their tour at the house of 45-year-old Joyce Worwonyo. Joyce, a member of the Miremire Assembly of the Apinamang District of The Church of Pentecost is a victim of galamsey operation.

The mother of five is being ejected from her house after the landowner sold it to galamseyers.

According to her, the miners, who have warned her severally to evacuate the land, have destroyed her cocoa farm in just four months after beginning their operations. The activities of the miners had left a huge pit close to her house, thus endangering the lives of her relatives.

Petitioning the President

In a letter issued last Monday by Dr. Cyril Fayose, the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), the Christian ecumenical bodies expressed their intent to petition the government to swiftly intervene to end the destruction of all the country’s forest reserves and water bodies by the activities of illegal mining.

Ahead of the petitioning, the Christian leaders would address a press conference at the Assemblies of God Church Head Office at Osu in Accra, to remind Ghanaians of their mandate to keep the environment and be responsible stewards of same (Genesis 2:15).

The Galamsey Menace

Galamsey has become a topical issue in Ghana in recent months following a resurgence in news reports on its continued negative impact on the environment, particularly the country’s water bodies.

The Ghana Water Company Limited has said that continuous destruction of water bodies through illegal mining is increasing the cost of water due to the rising cost of aluminum sulphate used for the treatment.
