Missio Dei in the Stadium: Church Ministry Through Sports Chaplaincy

Sports have become one of the most influential social institutions in the contemporary world, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Football fields, stadiums, and training grounds serve as meeting points where identity, relationships, and aspirations are shaped. While the Church has traditionally focused ministry within church buildings, there exists a vast mission field within the sporting world. The concept of Missio Dei reminds believers that God’s redemptive work extends beyond ecclesiastical spaces into every sphere of life, including sports.

The Missio Dei underscores that mission originates from God, who actively seeks to redeem and restore humanity. This understanding broadens the Church’s outlook on ministry, moving beyond occasional evangelistic activities to intentional engagement with society. Sport, as a powerful cultural force influencing millions, presents a strategic platform for Christian witness. Athletes, coaches, and administrators often live under demanding schedules that limit their participation in regular church gatherings. Sports chaplaincy, therefore, serves as a bridge that brings pastoral care and spiritual guidance directly into their environment.

My engagement as chaplain to Elmina Sharks Football Club for more than one and a half years has provided practical insights into how the Church can participate in God’s mission within the sporting arena. This ministry has largely been built on relationships, presence, and consistent pastoral care. Regular visits to training sessions have created opportunities to interact with players in their natural setting, helping to build trust and understand the pressures they face.

Sunday morning fellowship sessions, often held before home matches, have also created meaningful moments for devotion, prayer, and encouragement. Travelling with the team during both home and away matches has allowed for deeper conversations and the opportunity to provide emotional and spiritual support during moments of pressure, disappointment, or victory. In addition, confidential one-on-one counselling sessions have enabled players to share personal challenges, including injuries, family concerns, career uncertainties, and financial pressures.

Through these interactions, it has become evident that athletes value the presence of someone who listens with compassion and offers spiritual encouragement. Sports chaplaincy promotes spiritual awareness, strengthens character, and supports emotional well-being. It also fosters positive relationships between the Church and the sporting community, demonstrating that Christian ministry addresses the total well-being of individuals.

For sports chaplaincy to flourish, the Church must intentionally recognise sport as a legitimate mission field. Training and supporting chaplains, while building partnerships with sporting institutions and community clubs, will help establish sustainable ministry structures. As the Church embraces this calling, stadiums and training grounds become spaces where the love, grace, and transforming power of God are experienced, affirming that the mission of God continues to unfold wherever people gather.

Jesus Christ Is the Source of Divine Health – Apostle Davidson

The Area Head of The Church of Pentecost in Sefwi Wiawso, Apostle Samuel Edzii Davidson, has stated that divine health is essential for fulfilling one’s God-given destiny, emphasising that Jesus Christ remains the accredited provider of a healthy and whole life for believers.

He made the remark during the morning session of the ongoing “Sefwi For Christ” crusade on March 13, 2026, at The Church of Pentecost Central Auditorium in Sefwi Bekwai.

Speaking on the topic “Jesus Christ, the Accredited Healthy Life Provider”, he drew lessons from the Third Epistle of John 1:2, explaining that good health is essential for fulfilling one’s destiny, noting that physical weakness and illness can easily become major distractions in life.

“If you are healthy, you are able to fulfil your destiny,” he said, adding that persistent pain or sickness can divide a person’s focus and hinder productivity.

Referencing Mark 12:29–30, he noted that a person who is not healthy may struggle to fully concentrate on serving God and contributing meaningfully to society.

He stressed that divine health is part of God’s desire for His people, citing Matthew 8:1–2 to affirm that God does not intend for His children to remain in a state of infirmity but desires to heal and restore them.

Apostle Davidson further encouraged believers to have confidence in God’s power to heal, referencing John 5:14–15, which assures believers that God hears and answers prayers offered according to His will.

“If it is the will of God for you to be well, no devil can keep you sick,” he stated.

He concluded by urging believers to demonstrate faith in the gospel by stepping forward in faith and doing what they could not previously do, describing divine health as “the bread for God’s children” and a powerful testimony that can inspire others.

Twifo Praso Hosts Transformational Twifo For Christ Gospel Crusade

The Twifo For Christ Gospel and Power Crusade brought a remarkable wave of spiritual renewal to Twifo Praso and its surrounding communities as thousands gathered at the A&D School Park for five days of intensive evangelism, prayer, and worship.

The event, which attracted more than 6,000 people from diverse backgrounds, became a powerful platform through which many encountered the saving grace and power of Jesus Christ.

Held from February 17–21, 2026, the crusade was organised by the Twifo Praso Area of The Church of Pentecost under the leadership of Apostle Lawrence Otu-Nyarko and his wife, Mrs. Doris Otu-Nyarko. Dubbed “Twifo for Christ Gospel and Power Crusade,” the outreach aligned with the church’s 2026 theme aimed at unleashing the entire church to transform society with the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit.

The crusade ran with the theme, “Jesus Christ, Saviour of the World” (John 4:42), featuring morning and evening sessions marked by fervent prayer, vibrant praise and worship, and life-transforming messages.

The opening night was ministered by Apostle Dr. Amos Jimmy Markin, Executive Council Member of The Church of Pentecost, RCC Coordinator for the Central Region and Cape Coast Area Head. Preaching on the hope found in Christ, he explained that humanity, though lost in sin, has been given a remedy through Jesus Christ. Emphasising that salvation can only be found in the name of Jesus, he called on the crowd to embrace the gift of redemption.

On the second and third nights, Apostle Lawrence Otu-Nyarko expounded on the crusade theme, highlighting Christ as the only Saviour who restores the broken and grants abundant life.

He noted that although the enemy seeks to destroy destinies, the love of Christ brings restoration and hope to humanity. His messages stirred many hearts and led numerous people to surrender their lives to Christ.

Friday’s session featured Elder Dr. Nana Samuel Amoh Tobin, Chief Executive Officer of the Tobinco Group of Companies, who spoke on the enduring love of God.

He noted that salvation through Christ brings not only eternal life but also divine protection, mercy, and peace in daily living. His message drew many to the altar in response to the call of God’s relentless love.

On the final night, Elder Dr. Bismark Amoah of Bohye Prayer Centre delivered a message on the benefits of Christ as the Saviour of the world, emphasising that salvation in Jesus brings healing, deliverance, and restoration to all who believe.

A counselling session held on the final morning at the Asikafo Assembly also provided guidance and prayer support for 81 individuals seeking help in various aspects of life.

As the crusade concluded with thanksgiving and celebration, Apostle Lawrence Otu-Nyarko commended the organising teams and encouraged members to sustain the revival by continuing to share the gospel in their communities, reaffirming the church’s commitment to the Possessing the Nations agenda.

Christ Alone Has Power To Save, Transform Lives web

Christ Alone Has Power To Save, Transform Lives – Apostle Edzii Davidson

Apostle Samuel Edzii Davidson, Sefwi Wiawso Area Head of The Church of Pentecost, has proclaimed that salvation, transformation, and eternal life are found in Jesus Christ alone.

Preaching on the theme “We Have Seen Him, Christ the Saviour” from 1 John 4:14 at the ongoing “Tamale For Christ” crusade on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at the Jubilee Park, he stressed that the deepest need of humanity is a true Saviour, and that Jesus remains the only one qualified to redeem the world.

He affirmed that the Christian message stands on a firm testimony: the encounter with the Son of God, who is the Saviour of all.

Apostle Davidson explained that anyone who genuinely encounters Jesus experiences a complete change in destiny and lifestyle. He noted that Christ alone possesses the power to transform a person’s life in a way no human effort can achieve.

He said a life touched by Christ cannot remain the same because the Lord redirects destinies and brings individuals into alignment with God’s purpose. He emphasised that salvation through Christ rescues humanity from sin and eternal death.

To die without Christ, he noted, is to die in one’s sins, but to die in Christ is to enter eternity with forgiveness and hope. He therefore urged all gathered to accept Jesus as their Saviour, describing salvation as a gift freely offered to all who believe.

Speaking on transformation, he indicated that Jesus delivers individuals from ungodly and sinful lifestyles and releases their God-given potential.

According to him, a crooked life suppresses destiny, but an encounter with Christ empowers individuals to impact their generation in righteousness and godliness. On divine healing, he assured the congregation that Christ’s power extends to every form of sickness – whether congenital, hereditary, or long-standing – affirming that no infirmity is beyond the reach of Jesus’ healing touch.

Apostle Davidson highlighted the uniqueness of Christ’s resurrection as the foundation of the Christian faith, contrasting it with the graves of other religious leaders that still exist. He reminded the audience that the empty tomb is the eternal proof that Jesus is alive and continues to save and transform lives.

Concluding his message with 1 Peter 2:24, he declared that Christ bore humanity’s sins on the cross, giving Him the authority to forgive. He added that those who believe in Jesus receive power to live victoriously because the risen Lord imparts strength and new life to all who trust in Him.

Only Jesus Offers True Salvation – Apostle Obuobi Declares

Apostle Samuel Gyau Obuobi, the General Secretary of The Church of Pentecost, has reaffirmed that Jesus Christ is the ultimate Saviour of the world, urging believers to embrace Him for deliverance from sin and spiritual death.

He delivered the message on Wednesday, November 27, 2025, at the Jubilee Park during the ongoing Tamale For ChristCrusade, preaching under the theme, “Jesus the Saviour.”

Apostle Obuobi traced humanity’s need for salvation to the fall in the Garden of Eden, explaining that disobedience separated mankind from God and created a spiritual void only Christ could fill. Drawing from 1 John 4:14, he reminded the congregation that “the Father has sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world.”

He noted that God’s creation was perfect, and His instructions to humanity were clear, referencing Genesis 2:16–17 where Adam was commanded not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

He explained that deception entered the Garden through Satan, leading humanity to believe the deceiver over God, resulting in both spiritual and physical death (Genesis 3:19; Romans 6:23). “Spiritual death brought separation from God, while physical death became the destiny of all people, regardless of status,”he said.

Apostle Obuobi emphasised that sin caused humanity to lose the glory of God and rendered mankind powerless to redeem itself. “No human being or sacrificed animal could pay the price for the soul of man, which is precious and costly,” he stated. It was in this state of helplessness that Jesus Christ appeared as the world’s only Saviour, sent not as an ordinary figure but as the one capable of redeeming humanity. Quoting 1 Timothy 1:15, he affirmed that Christ came specifically “to save sinners.”

He further explained that Jesus’ mission was one of salvation, not condemnation, citing John 3:17 and the account of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:10–11). “When Jesus saves, He delivers people from the power of sin and breaks the hold of addiction,” he added, referencing Matthew 1:20–21 that Jesus came “to save His people from their sins.”

Concluding, Apostle Obuobi reminded believers that salvation in Christ restores what was lost in Eden and provides a path back to God.

The crusade drew several church leaders, including Apostle Emmanuel Kwesi Appiah (Director, Evangelism Ministry), Apostle John Budu Kobina Tawiah (Tamale Area Head), Evangelist Abraham Addae Agyemang (Coordinator, The Other Sheep Ministry), and other Area Heads and coordinators from across the region.
