A Transformer Or Conformist? – Lessons From Nehemiah’s Leadership

One of the greatest transformers who ever lived undoubtedly is Nehemiah. The book of Nehemiah provides great lessons as far as leadership is concerned. Nehemiah, who was poised to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem despite the numerous challenges meted against him, realised the high rate of corruption amongst his people. Nehemiah 5:6-7 NIV reads, “When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry. I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, ‘You are charging your own people interest!’ So I called together a large meeting to deal with them.”

The people were expressing their grievances about the oppressive practices of their fellow Jews, who were charging interest on loans and taking advantage of their poorer neighbors. As a result, many of the people were becoming indebted, losing their properties, and even facing the risk of having to sell their own children into slavery to pay off their debts.

Nehemiah, upon hearing these complaints, was deeply troubled and immediately took action to address the situation. He called a meeting with the offenders and confronted them about their unethical behavior, reminding them of the laws of God that prohibited the exploitation of their own people. Nehemiah also pointed out the negative impact that their actions were having on the reputation of the Jewish community in the eyes of their enemies.

Indeed, Nehemiah was a great transformer of his time. Unlike the other Jewish leaders, he chose to transform his sphere rather than conforming to the evil practices that had existed for a very long time. His response to the injustice and suffering of his people should serve as an example for leadership at every level. It is clear he had the welfare of the people at heart. He didn’t take advantage of their situation to exploit them. He did not only listen to the grievances but also took decisive action to address the root cause of the problem and provide relief to those who were suffering. He demonstrated his commitment to justice, righteousness, and the well-being of his community. This is worth emulating.

It is time we understand that leadership is a great calling. You have been called to alleviate the pains and sufferings of the people and not to increase or add to their plight. Let’s all arise and make Jesus Christ proud in whatever sector or organisation we find ourselves. Be that great transformer that organisation has ever desired.

The secret to Nehemiah’s transformative attitude is found in Nehemiah 5:15, which reads, “But the earlier governors—those preceding me—placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that.” He feared God. He translated the fear of God in him into his leadership. If all men who claim to fear God will go the way of Nehemiah, I believe we will surely see the great transformation we so desire in our land.

So let it be said one day that, once upon a time, there was a great transformer in this organisation who brought joy and satisfaction to his people. May God grant you the grace to lead His people.

Atonsu Area Head Launches Maiden Book

Apostle Gideon Obeng-Darko Debrah, the Atonsu Area Head of The Church of Pentecost, launched his first book titled “The Blessings of God” on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

The event was held at the Simon Kwaku Awere Memorial Temple in Atonsu and drew distinguished personalities, including prominent men of God, business leaders, elders, and members of the Church.

Apostle Debrah explained that the book explores the origins of blessings and delves into the scriptures to elaborate on the concept of leading a blessed life.

In “The Blessings of God,” Apostle Debrah delineated the different forms of blessings, emphasising that while they come with challenges, one should persevere in prayer and trust in God to actualize the fullness of these blessings.

While acknowledging that blessings are often equated with material wealth, the author stressed that the spiritual foundation of blessings is paramount and should be prioritized above all else.

Apostle G.O.D Debrah expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support at the book launch and hinted that this was just the beginning of his literary journey.

Prophet James Osei Amaniampong (Rtd), the special guest of honor, advised clergy members to cultivate a culture of writing books to safeguard their congregants from false teachings. He underscored the significance of clergy-authored works as valuable resources filled with biblical wisdom, guiding believers and combatting doctrinal inaccuracies.

“The Blessings of God” is now available at The Church of Pentecost’s bookshops nationwide, offering believers an opportunity to deepen their understanding of God’s blessings.

Miawani M/A Basic School, located in the Koransang Electoral Area of Suhum in the Eastern Region of Ghana, has received a generous donation from Pent TV Anchor, Mr. Kwabena Mantey, and his wife, Eunice.

The Miawani M/A Basic School is the only school in at Miawani, a farming community in the Suhum Municipality with limited access to basic amenities, including potable water and proper school facilities.

The school has long struggled with poor conditions, leading to a shortage of teachers willing to serve there. Currently, the school, which boasts a total of 55 pupils, is managed by just two dedicated teachers, the headteacher and his assistant.

Speaking to PENTECOST NEWS in an interview, Mr. Kwabena Mantey said that a year ago, he visited the school and witnessed the challenging conditions faced by both pupils and teachers. Moved by what he saw, he decided to take action.

“On my return visit, my wife and I organised a soccer tournament between Miawani M/A Basic School and Koransang Basic School, bringing joy and excitement to the pupils and the entire community,” he said.

Additionally, the couple donated essential school supplies, including exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, and sharpeners. They also provided water bottles, a set of jerseys for the school, a football, a trophy, and a cash prize for the tournament winners. Refreshments were also part of the donation package.

The headteacher of the school, Mr. Ishmael Gyamfi, expressed immense gratitude for the support, highlighting the positive impact these resources would have on the pupils’ learning experience.

“Miawani school lacks many educational infrastructures, such as a school building and desks. This gesture by Mr. Kwabena Mantey is a huge relief for us,” he said.

The event was graced by the presence of officers from the Municipal Education Directorate Schools Improvement Support, led by Mr. Emmanuel Mantey, who commended the couple for their benevolence.

Pastor Ankomako Urges Christians To Embrace Boldness In Their Faith Journey

The Mile 3 District Minister of The Church of Pentecost, Pastor Joseph Ankomako, has called on Christians, particularly members of the Church, to bring their boldness to bear in all aspects of their faith journey.

During a sermon at the “Mid-Year Prayer Conference” organised by the Yennyawoso District at the Central Assembly auditorium on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Pastor Ankomako emphasised the vital role of boldness in advancing the unleashing agenda of the Church.

Preaching on the topic, “Unleashed the Bold; Quarantine the Coward,” Pastor Ankomako defined boldness as willingness to venture out and do the right thing at the right time, despite barriers or threats that may arise.

Citing examples from biblical passages such as Daniel 5:22-31, and Acts 5:26-42, he highlighted the boldness and courage displayed by Daniel and the early disciples, encouraging believers to emulate such virtues. He expressed concern over the prevalent cowardice among modern-day Christians, emphasising the urgency to break free from the shackles of fear and embody boldness.

“It is about time that we speak with boldness. When we speak with boldness, God will glorify us,” he advised.

Pastor Ankomako, who also serves as the New Tafo Area Evangelism Ministry Leader identified various reasons for Christians’ inability to speak with boldness, including prioritizing personal safety and reputation, as well as a lack of reliance on the Holy Spirit.

Highlighting the benefits of embracing boldness, the clergyman stressed that it empowers Christians to claim their possessions, maximize their potentials, and save many souls.

Pastor Joseph Ankomako also cautioned against misconstruing timidity as genuine humility. He referenced Proverbs 28:1, urging Christians to model righteousness and exhibit the boldness of a lion.

After the sermon, he took the congregation through a period of prayer.

The District Minister, Pastor Wellington Vigbedor, assisted by Pastors Daniel Donkor Larbi (Mampong District), Frederick Nyarko (Akropong District), Ransford Baah (Aburi District), and Overseer Fred Allotey (Klo Agogo District) officiated the service.

Speaking at the service on the topic, ‘Do Not Lose Your Crown’ based on 1 Samuel 8:1-8, Pastor Frederick Nyarko explained that Samuel became a leader of integrity in all aspects, but his children failed to follow his footsteps. He, therefore, called on leaders to ensure that their homes are put in order.

He noted that life is a journey to fulfil a God-given mandate and that every person has a specific purpose that has been given to them by God.

According to Pastor Nyarko, being an officer is not about how long one serves but the impact they make. He added that leaders need to avoid division among members in discharging their duties.

He charged officers to stand their grounds, hold on to their faith and pass on what they have built to the next generation.

Dignitaries present to grace the occasion included Okogyeahene Otoafom Saforo Okoampah III (Chief of Apirede Akuapem), Mrs. Diana Acheampong (Wife of Koforidua Effiduase Area Head), Pastor Isaac Annor of PIWC-Downtown, among others.

HUM Leadership Strategises Towards Possessing the Nations web

HUM Leadership Strategises Towards “Possessing the Nations”

Apostle Emmanuel Agyei Kwafo, the National Coordinator for the Home and Urban Missions (HUM) of The Church of Pentecost, led a one-day meeting with the National Executive Committee on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at The Church of Pentecost Missions Transit Quarters in East Legon, Accra.

The session, centred on the theme “Lessons from Colossians,” emphasised unity and dedication towards the “Possessing the Nations” agenda.

Drawing from Colossians 4:7–15 and 17, Apostle Kwafo highlighted the exemplary lives of biblical figures to inspire modern-day ministry.

He began with Tychicus, whose close relationship with the apostle Paul and dedication to ministry serve as a model for current leaders. Apostle Kwafo urged the committee to emulate Tychicus’ commitment and fervor.

Reflecting on Onesimus, once a runaway, now described by Paul as a “faithful and beloved brother,” Apostle Kwafo emphasised the transformative power of ministry.

He expressed hope that today’s converts would experience similar positive transformations, leaving their pasts behind to embrace new, faithful roles within the church.

The HUM Coordinator also mentioned other notable figures like Aristarchus, Mark, Jesus (Justus), and Epaphras, who supported Paul while maintaining their professional commitments.

He highlighted their collaborative efforts as crucial for achieving the common goal of “possessing the nations.”

Apostle Kwafo particularly commended Epaphras for his hard work, urging Christians to strive for such dedication that their leaders would vouch for them.

Finally, Apostle Kwafo spoke about Archippus, encouraging him to continue and expand his ministry.

He interpreted Paul’s message as an exhortation to give one’s utmost in ministry, aligning with the church’s broader mission.

In his closing remarks, Apostle Kwafo prayed for the leaders, asking for divine strength and guidance to fulfill their roles effectively and contribute to the church’s mission of possessing the nations.

He underscored the importance of hard work, faithfulness, and a unified approach to achieving the church’s objectives.

Apostle Kwafo Promotes HUM & Inclusive Evangelism web

Apostle Kwafo Promotes HUM & Inclusive Evangelism

As part of his two-day working visit to the Winneba Area, Apostle Emmanuel Agyei Kwafo, the Home and Urban Missions (HUM) Coordinator of The Church of Pentecost, engaged with church leaders to elaborate on the mission and scope of HUM.

The meeting, held at the Hallelujah Temple on Friday, June 2, 2024, convened officers and HUM workers from the Area, District, and Local levels in the Winneba and Awutu Beraku Zones.

According to Apostle Kwafo, the main purpose for the visit was to clarify HUM’s mission and encourage stakeholders to commit to reaching its target groups.

He commenced the session with a devotion from Colossians 4:5, urging attendees to maximise their time for evangelism, as opportunities may not always be available.

Apostle Kwafo shared insights into the evolution of traditional ministries within the church, highlighting that these initiatives were divine interventions placed on the hearts of the church’s founders.

Similarly, he explained that the church has established new ministry interventions such as HUM to cater to specific target groups, underscoring the importance of integrating these new ministries into the existing church framework.

Reading from Psalm 22:27–28, Apostle Kwafo stressed that every person on earth will eventually turn to the Lord, as God reigns over the world. He emphasized that the realisation of this vision involves reaching out to specific groups to enable the global spread of the gospel.

The HUM model, he explained, focuses on expatriates, African migrants, Northern migrants to the south, Unreached People Groups (UPGs), and the urban poor and marginalised. Apostle Kwafo outlined practical steps for local leadership to strengthen their efforts, including organising regular meetings and training sessions.

He discouraged the random selection of non-HUM workers for HUM-specific meetings and emphasized that HUM officers should not be labeled based on the target group’s activities.

Apostle Daniel Nii Tetteh Tackie, the Area Head, reinforced the importance of the ministry, urging ministers to strive for its success as they will one day assume leadership roles.

He encouraged Christians to wholeheartedly preach the gospel, acknowledging the challenges but asserting that God’s support will prevail.

He called on officers and members to support HUM and avoid derogatory remarks towards those dedicated to the ministry, instead urging them to step out of their comfort zones to reach the marginalised.

In attendance were Apostle Daniel Nii Tetteh Tackie (Area Head), Pastor Emmanuel Foster Asamoah (HUM NEC Member and District Minister, Abasraba), Pastor Solomon Anderson (Ashaiman Sector HUM Pastor), Overseer Daniel Adu (Area HUM Coordinator), and a cross-section of ministers and their spouses from the area.

HUM Coordinator Embarks On Working Visit To Winneba Area

The Home and Urban Missions (HUM) Coordinator of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Emmanuel Agyei Kwafo, conducted a two-day working visit to the Winneba Area, meeting with the Apam zone on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at McKeown Temple, Apam.

During his address to church officers and HUM workers, Apostle Kwafo drew from John 3:16–17, urging the audience to replace the word “world” with any of the HUM target groups. This exercise aimed to highlight God’s universal love and Jesus’ mission for all, including marginalized groups such as prostitutes and “wee” smokers.

Apostle Kwafo emphasised that the gospel is intended for everyone, and each soul requires a unique approach to be reached effectively.

He noted that while traditional methods have drawn in certain groups, we must tailor our methods to their unique contexts to win specific target groups.

He stressed that preachers accepted by specific groups would also have their messages received.

Apostle Kwafo elaborated on HUM’s mission to reach foreign nationals, African migrants, northerners in the south, unreached people groups (including Fulani, Mamprusi, Kotokoli, and Anafu), as well as the urban poor and marginalised, such as street children and “wee” smokers.

To run HUM successfully, Apostle Kwafo called for strong leadership at all levels. He emphasised the importance of planning, organising, and disciplining converts, as well as maintaining thorough reporting.

Additionally, he suggested organising training sessions for leaders every two months, preparing annual plans, holding mid-year and end-of-year meetings, and promoting HUM paraphernalia like T-shirts for gospel Sunday meetings.

The Area Head for Winneba, Apostle Daniel Nii Tetteh Tackie, also reiterated the importance of reaching out to the HUM target groups. He noted that Jesus Christ was crucified on the outskirts of Jerusalem, where the marginalized were kept, and encouraged everyone to put in their maximum efforts, as evangelism is God’s heartbeat.

Present at the meeting were Pastors Emmanuel Foster Asamoah (National HUM Executive Committee Member and District Minister for Abasraba), Michael Awuni (Area Secretary and District Minister for Mumford), Bismark Aidan (Apam District), Overseer Daniel Adu (Area HUM Coordinator and District Minister for Gomoa Kyiren), and some ministers’ wives.

Lungu South Chief Lauds The Church Of Pentecost For Giving Them Church Building web

Lungu South Chief Lauds The Church Of Pentecost For Giving Them Church Building

The chiefs and people of Lungu South, near Bongo in the Upper East Region, have commended The Church of Pentecost for putting up a beautiful church building for the people of the community to worship God.

The chief of the community, Naba Amunga-Lungu, together with the Bolgatanga Area Head of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle David Amankwaa, on June 7, 2024, cut the tape to commission the Community-Based Church Building (CBCB) at the cost GHS 105,000.00.

Naba Amunga-Lungu seized the opportunity to appeal to the Area Head and the leadership of The Church of Pentecost to release funds for another church building to be constructed on a piece of land he has donated to the church around the palace so that he and his family members and kinsmen can have a nice place to worship God.

The Lungu South assembly in the Bongo District of the Bolgatanga Area of The Church of Pentecost was opened 23 years ago, thus in 2001 during the tenure of the late Pastor David Azagisiya. The members initially fellowshipped at the Father Lebel Memorial R/C Primary School, with Brother Francis Amogre Atinga (now a pastor in charge of the Bukere District in the Bolgatanga Area) as its first presiding officer.

The assembly grew in membership under the following district ministers – the late Pastor David Azagisiya, Pastor Fred Obboh, Pastor Thomas Anane, Pastor Peter Blood Asante Afful and currently, Pastor Evans Kwasi Bawomia, with the following as the presiding officers – Francis Amogre Atinga (now a pastor), Elder Isaac Abongo Adongo, Elder James Atanga and Elder Titus Amogre.

The construction of the church building began in 2018 during the tenure of Pastor Peter Blood Asante Afful, when a CBCB grant was released by the Headquarters. The land for the church building was donated by the Amogre-Atinga’s family of Lungu.

Work went on smoothly until the funds were exhausted, thereby stalling the project. In 2019, the district under the current minister, Pastor Bawomia, secured grants from the Bolgatanga Area while the assembly raised funds to complete the project.
