The Pentecost Child and Youth Development Centre (PCYDC) in Duayaw Nkwanta, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), has organised a Child Protection training for teachers and educators within the Tano North Municipality.
The training, themed “Child Protection, Teacher Involvement,” aimed to equip teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge regarding child rights and discipline to foster a holistic approach to child education.
Addressing participants at the event, which took place on Friday, October 18, 2024, Mr. George Yaw Ankama, the Bono Regional Director of the Department of Children under the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, emphasised that the rights of children are not meant to undermine the authority of teachers or other implementing partners like GES.
However, he said, they are designed to empower teachers or other implementing partners to educate children about their rights, which comes with the responsibility to respect authority.
He further urged teachers to embrace the new regulations on discipline, particularly the ban on caning, to prevent violent disciplinary actions that could lead to legal trouble for educators.
Pastor Emmanuel Osei Akosah, the CEO of PCYDC, explained the purpose of the training, stating that it is to enhance the skills of the teachers in handling children and protecting them from abuse.
Madam Georgina Valentina Asante, the Tano North Municipal School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, expressed her satisfaction with the training, noting its positive impact.
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Agyemang Badu, the Headmaster of Duayaw Nkwanta Methodist Basic School, remarked that the training will be valuable for teachers in their daily interactions with students.
