INTRODUCTION

The ongoing debate about polygamy and multiple marriages on various media platforms in Ghana has caught my attention in recent weeks. As an observer, I initially intended to refrain from participating in or commenting on the discussion. However, after witnessing a short clip featuring a self-proclaimed clergyman (involved in a polygamous relationship) vigorously advocating for polygamy as a means to attain longevity, I felt compelled to contribute to this discourse. In this article, I will present arguments from various perspectives to demonstrate why this notion is flawed and should not be supported, as espoused by the aforementioned clergyman.

I address this matter in my capacity as a fellow clergyman, having taken a solemn oath to uphold the gospel unwaveringly. Additionally, I respond as a Christian media professional entrusted with the role of filtering content for consumers, allowing us to discern between truth and falsehood. Lastly, in pursuit of moral rectitude and national development, it is essential for all individuals to collectively work towards realising this vision, and I am committed to playing my part.

POLYGAMY AND MULTIPLE MARRIAGES – A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

The Bible is a compilation of doctrinal, spiritual, historical, and archaeological accounts. Its contents are not mere products of the author’s imagination; rather, they recount real-life stories and historical events from antiquity, documented for our education, enlightenment, and growth. The Apostle Paul’s message to the Church in Rome emphasised that the records of old were written for our learning (Rom. 15:4). It is important to note that the Bible is an honest record, depicting the good, the bad, and the ugly, with transparency. However, this does not imply endorsement of the negative examples but rather serves as a guide for readers to avoid what is harmful and embrace what is virtuous. With this understanding, we can trace the origins of polygamy and multiple marriages in the Bible.

The first recorded instance of multiple marriages is found in Genesis 4:19, where Lamech, a descendant of Cain, took two wives – Adah and Zillah. Although speculation exists regarding Lamech’s reasons for choosing polygamy, given that this choice deviated from the norm set by his ancestors, his poetic utterance in Gen. 4:23-24 reveals his disposition – one of rebellion, pride, and vengeance. This decision stemmed from the aftermath of the advent of sin and its dire consequences. This effect can be likened to the “fig leaves syndrome” (Gen. 3:7), wherein actions driven by human wisdom seek to address conditions through logical assessment. Lamech’s choice to marry two wives can be seen as an embodiment of this syndrome. The Apostle Paul later elucidated that God gave certain individuals over to engage in shameful actions (Rom. 1:24).

POLYGAMY – A CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE

Proponents of multiple marriages and polygamy often justify their stance with cultural arguments. They contend that ancient cultures, particularly in the Near East, have historically embraced and sanctioned polygamy. This assertion is grounded in the belief that the limited population during those times prompted God to allow polygamy as a means to promote procreation and fulfill the command to “be fruitful and multiply.” However, this argument fails to acknowledge God’s character as light and holiness, rendering attributions of sin to Him problematic.

Moreover, these proponents often dissociate God from cultures, despite the Bible’s assertion that God’s presence exists within all cultures, as articulated by Apostle Paul during his mission to Lystra and Derbe (Acts 14:17). The Earth belongs to the Lord and all its fullness, which encompasses cultures, values, norms, and every aspect shaping the world’s existence.

The fall of humanity also affected cultural norms, as creation was subjected to frustration (Rom. 8:20). The gospel, however, aimed to reconcile the world, including its systems and cultures, back to God through Christ (2 Cor. 5:21). Therefore, the idea that polygamy is a solution for longevity must be scrutinised.

WHY POLYGAMY IS NOT A SOLUTION FOR LONG LIFE

  1. POLYGAMY IS NOT BIBLICAL

It is crucial to affirm that polygamy is not supported by scripture. The creation narrative in Genesis establishes monogamy as the original design for marriage (Gen. 2:24). Adam and Eve, the first couple, exemplified this monogamous relationship. Despite God’s ability to create multiple spouses for Adam, He chose to create only one. The marital relationship is also a prophetic reflection of God’s relationship with the Church. Therefore, any departure from this design can result in spiritual infidelity, as evident in Israel’s idolatry in the Old Testament.

  • POLYGAMY IS COSTLY

Polygamy is associated with substantial economic, social, and psychological costs. In cultures that emphasise lavish marriage ceremonies, engaging in multiple marriages can strain one’s financial resources. Economic variables often change, causing costs to escalate with each subsequent marriage. Furthermore, the psychological and social toll of polygamy is immeasurable, as evident in historical cases. The Taliban’s recent crackdown on polygamy within its ranks highlights the economic burden this practice can impose.

  •  POLYGAMY IS A DISTRACTION AND DETRACTOR

Polygamy can be a temporary pleasure but ultimately distracts and detracts from one’s focus and potential. Engaging in multiple relationships can lead to emotional turmoil and lack of focus, inhibiting personal growth and alignment with God’s will. King Solomon’s example underscores the spiritual danger of polygamy, as he compromised his devotion to God through his numerous wives.

  • POLYGAMY PROMOTES ENVY AND JEALOUSY

We cannot belabour the point that one of the devastating effects of polygamy is how it promotes envy and jealousy. It is evident in the lives of the patriarchs in the scriptures how polygamy dealt a significant blow to the bloodlines. From the encounter between Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar, we saw the elements of jealousy and envy to the extent that God had to intervene to settle the issue by instructing Abraham to let Hagar go (Gen. 21:11-12). Additionally, the situation became murky in the lives of Jacob and his four wives, along with his twelve children, and the picture clearly portrays the dagger of envy and jealousy that pierced through the fabric of this family.

Beloved, even though the Bible paints a beautiful picture of Jacob’s life and the blessings he carried, we cannot overlook the scars of the emotional breakdowns he had to manage and deal with because of his actions, the actions of his children, and even to the extent that it was evident he despised some of his children and even cursed some of them on his deathbed. Though Jacob’s home was blessed, it was not a loving and happy home due to the fangs of envy and jealousy that polygamy had brought.

  • POLYGAMY IS UNHEALTHY

The final reason why I think polygamy should not be seen as a panacea for long life is that polygamy is unhealthy. Beloved, polygamy is akin to having multiple sexual partners, as is the case in many instances. In effect, polygamy is another form of promiscuity. Now, the effects of this kind of promiscuity are that the more sexual partners one has, the greater their risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening conditions like prostate cancer, cervical cancer, and oral cancer. It is clear that there are risks associated with polygamy; hence, the admonition of scripture to stay true to the dictates prescribed in the scripture – one man, one wife, and faithfulness. For polygamy, rather than elongating life, tends to shorten it.

CONCLUSION

The purpose of this article is to provide a theological contribution to the ongoing debate, seemingly approving and endorsing the concept of polygamy and multiple marriages. With the prophetic blueprint that the family line is gradually becoming an endangered species, there is a need to raise counter-responses in order to clear the mist so that the values espoused for marriage and family life are not compromised, even as society evolves in this post-modern era.

Yennyawoso District Gets New Pastor

Pastor Maxwell Adubofourh Asiedu assumed office as the new Yennyawoso District Minister of The Church of Pentecost on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at a special welcome service held in honour of Adubofourh Asiedu family.

Pastor Adubofourh Asiedu replaces Pastor Charles Oduro, who has been transferred to Kasoa Galilea in the Downtown-Ofaakor Area after five years of sterling service in the Yennyawoso District.

The service, which took place at the Yennyawoso Central Assembly auditorium, was officiated by Pastor George Prah Amonoo (New Tafo District Minister).

Gracing the occasion were Pastor Ernest & Mrs. Mercy Addo (Kentinkrono District), the loved ones and well-wishers of the Adubofourh Asiedu family, including representatives from their previous stations.

Ministering the word of God on the topic: “Yielding to the Commander-In-Chief For Maximum Impact,” Pastor Prah Amonoo, who doubles as the New Tafo Area Secretary, urged Christians not to lean on their own effort and strategy in their walk with God, but to be constantly sensitive and obedient to the directives of the Holy Spirit, whom he described as the Commander-In-Chief of the Church for maximum impact in all their endeavours.

Focusing on Joshua 5:13-15 as his biblical text, he explained that Joshua and the people of Israel triumphed over their enemies and eventually inherited the Promised Land because Joshua submitted to the Lord’s will as he circumcised the Israelite men just as he was instructed (Joshua 5:2-3), and also celebrated the Passover (Joshua 5:10).

“As soon as Joshua got to know that the man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand was a Commander of the Lord’s army, he yielded to Him without recourse to his (Joshua’s) strategy, effort, plans and strength,” he stated.

The New Tafo Area Secretary noted that it is for the good of Christians to always submit to the will of the Lord.

Bringing his sermon to a close, Pastor George Prah Amonoo mentioned that yielding to the Lord’s directives engenders teamwork, respect, and trust, urging members and officers of the Yennyawoso District to cooperate with Pastor Maxwell Adubofourh Asiedu for greater impact in the district.

Married to Mrs. Joana Amoakowaah Adubofourh Asiedu with three children, Pastor Maxwell Adubofourh Asiedu was called into the full-time ministry of the Church from Asante Mampong Central District in 2001 and has since served in Sampa, East Legon, and Sekondi Districts.

He has also served as PENSA Travelling Secretary for Volta and Greater Accra regions and as Resident Minister for Sokode Lokoe, Mawuli Estate and Abossey Okai Worship Centres.

In response, Pastor Adubofourh Asiedu called for unity and love in doing God’s work, quoting 2 Kings 10:15-16.

Present at the service were Elder Dr. Stephen Sarfo Kantanka (New Tafo Area Deacon) and Deaconess Mercy Antwi Duah (New Tafo Area Women’s Ministry Leader), among others.

Women’s Director Pays Working Visit To Effiduase Area

The Director of the Women’s Ministry of The Church of Pentecost, Mrs. Philomena Mireku, has paid a two-day working visit to the Effiduase Area of the Church.

Mrs. Mireku was accompanied on the visit by Mrs. Comfort Quampah and Deaconess Ellen Vigbedor, both members of the ministry’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

The visit, which started on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, saw the delegation fellowshipping with the women in the Effiduase, Akyem Tafo and Begoro zones of the Area.

Speaking to the women, Mrs. Mireku said the purpose of the visit was to extend her heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for her unwavering support and dedication to the Women’s Ministry.

She thanked the womenfolk of the area for their active involvement during the recently-held Mid-Year Reports Reading and encouraged them to keep up the good work.

“Your contributions have been pivotal in building an impactful and thriving church community. Your commitment and efforts are truly inspiring. Thank you for being a cornerstone of strength and positivity in our journey,” she said.

Speaking on the theme, “Repositioning the Family as a tool for Maximum Impact in the Local Church”, with reference from Titus 2:1-5, and Proverbs 31:10-28, the Women’s Ministry Director drew lessons from the Puritans’ approach to church and marriage: Mrs. Mireku emphasised the importance of building a marriage on strong biblical principles, just as the Puritans focused on aligning their lives with Scripture.

She encouraged wives to cultivate spiritual unity with their husbands, as Puritan couples often shared a deep commitment to their faith.

To spur on, she strongly recommended that wives practice self-discipline and self-control, mirroring the Puritans’ emphasis on self-improvement and moral integrity.

The Women’s Director highlighted the Puritans’ dedication to prayer and devotional life, inspiring wives to prioritise regular prayer and spiritual growth within their marriages.

She noted the Puritan perspective on submission within marriage, emphasising the balance between mutual respect and a wife’s willingness to follow her husband’s lead.

Teaching the value of a servant-heart, similar to the Puritans’ emphasis on humility and serving one another in love, she admonished. She explored the Puritan ideals of contentment and gratitude, encouraging wives to find joy in their roles and blessings within their marriages.

As a courageous and charismatic leader, Mrs. Mireku emphasised the importance of cultivating strong character traits such as patience, kindness, and forgiveness, which were valued by the Puritans and contributed to a healthy marriage.

She also urged the women to embrace the practice of family worship, as Puritan families often gathered together for prayer, Bible study, and reflection.

Mrs. Mireku highlighted the Puritans’ sense of community and accountability within the church, encouraging wives to seek support and guidance from other believers.

Mrs. Mireku, therefore, encouraged Women, including mothers and wives, to prioritise their health care because taking care of their well-being allows them to fulfil their roles and responsibilities better.

By maintaining good health, they can provide better care for their families, be more productive at work, and enjoy a higher quality of life. Prioritising health care also sets a positive example for their loved ones, encouraging them to do the same.

In her final submission, Mrs. Mireku reiterated the importance of Christian wives serving their husbands with joy as rooted in the concept of mutual love, respect, and partnership within a marriage.

She noted that this nurturing relationship is based on trust, support, and shared responsibilities. While the idea of “serving” can vary, it should be understood as an expression of care and selflessness, where both partners contribute to each other’s well-being and growth.

Finally, she emphasised how joyful service fosters a harmonious and fulfilling marriage, allowing both individuals to thrive emotionally, spiritually, and personally.

The meeting was honoured by the Effiduase Area Head and wife, Pastor Stephen and Mrs. Okyere Acheampong, the Area Pastorate and their spouses, Women’s Ministry leaders and Executive Committee members, as well as officers and members of the Church.

Reflecting on the biblical principle of valuing and utilising all members of the body of Christ for effective and holistic ministry, Mrs. Mireku and her team used the opportunity of the visit to organise training empowerment for Women’s Ministry leaders and officers’ wives in the Church on fostering diversity of perspectives, promoting inclusive leadership, and maximising the potential of the women in the Church.

Holy Spirit Is The Greatest Heritage Of Christians – Overseer Mathias Wornu

The Chaplain of the Pentecost Senior High School (PENSEC) in Kumasi, Overseer Mathias Wornu, who doubles as the Resident Minister for the Estate Worship Centre in the New Tafo Area of The Church of Pentecost, has asserted that the Holy Spirit is the greatest heritage Christ Jesus bequeathed to Christians.

“As Christians, the heritage won for us through the blood and toil of our Lord Jesus Christ is the Holy Spirit,” he stated.

Overseer Wornu said this while delivering a sermon during a two-day Campus Retreat organised by the school from Thursday, July 27 to Friday, July 28, 2023. Dubbed: ‘Holy Spirit Convocation, ’ the event was held under the theme: “The Holy Spirit Will Come Upon You” (Luke 1:35; Acts 1:8), with Pastor Isaac Koda Plange and Overseer Nicholas Dei-Kumi as guest speakers.

It was held in two sessions: Morning and Afternoon, characterized by fasting and prayers.

Reading from Isaiah 11:1-2; 61:1-3, Overseer Wornu described the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, might, counsel, knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

He said that when the Holy Spirit comes, the weak become strong, the sick are healed, the captives are set free, and the good news is preached to the poor.

The Estate Worship Centre Resident Minister further explained that with the Holy Spirit, all things are possible.

“It was impossible for a virgin to conceive and give birth, but when the Holy Spirit came upon Mary, the impossibility became possible,” he stated.

According to him, though Jesus was God, He needed the Holy Spirit as He took on the human form because, without the Holy Spirit, there is absolutely nothing a man could do. For a reason, he stated, Jesus did not do away with the Holy Spirit during His earthly sojourn but waited for the Spirit to come upon Him (Matthew 3:16).

“As you remain human, flesh and blood, until the Holy Spirit comes, there is nothing meaningful you can do,” he stressed.

Overseer Mathias Wornu mentioned transformation of personality, being overshadowed by the power of the Most High, and having gifts to operate as the benefits of the Holy Spirit, highlighting the need for the students to be filled with the Holy Spirit to be able to do exploits and achieve higher heights in life.

After the sermon, he ushered the students into the period of prayer; and there was a mighty move of the Holy Spirit as many were healed of various ailments and set free from the tyranny of the devil, with several others receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Ekroful District Provides Members With Employable Skills & Health Screening

As part of a weeklong convention, dubbed the “August Prayer Convention,” the Ekroful District in the Agona Swedru Area of The Church of Pentecost organised an entrepreneurship training and a health-screening exercise on Saturday, August 19, 2023, for members of the Church.

The training programme and health screening exercise, organised in partnership with the Big Dreams Training Center and the Bethel Health Centre, took place at the church premises.

Exhorting the gathering prior to the skills training program, Pastor Edward Asamoah Antwi, the Ekroful District Minister, read from Hosea 4:6 to emphasise the need to work hard to make ends meet.

He bemoaned the practice of some Christians spending time only in prayer and not making any effort to find work to meet their needs.

“There are many Christians who have only resorted to prayers and are not ready to work, trusting that praying alone could make them wealthy,” he said.

He, therefore, urged Christians to endeavour to gain employable skills to cater to their needs and those of their family.

The team from the Big Dreams Training Center trained the congregation in Beekeeping, Snail rearing, Fish farming, and Mushroom farming.

They also took participants through the production of Fresh Yoghurt, Fruit Ice Cream, Brown Sugar, Shoe Polish, Biodigester, Soap, Toiletries, Washing Powder, Organic DDT, Organic Fertilizer, and Organic Weedicide.

The health screening exercise was spearheaded by a team of health officers from the Bethel Health Centre.

The team evaluated participants for a range of health concerns, provided medical consultations, and distributed necessary medications, all at no cost.

The weeklong event was themed “Reposition Yourself for Extra Oil for Maximum Impact” (Matthew 25:1-13) and was held in morning and evening sessions.

The convention featured five speakers, namely Apostle Derek Kwaning Mireku (Area Head), Pastor Fred Tetteh (Aniahu District), Pastor Emmanuel Essandor (Kwanyako District), Pastor Francis Teye Kanor (Chapel Square District), Pastor Bright Frimpong (PIWC-Swedru), Pastor Isaac Owusu Gyebi (Otsenkorang District), and Pastor James Rockson Forson (Rtd.).

The Kaneshie Area Head of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Samuel Osei Asante, dedicated the church building of Emmanuel Assembly in the Darkuman Nyamekye District on Sunday, July 23, 2023.

Apostle Asante was assisted by the Darkuman Nyamekye District Minister, Pastor Joseph Ackah, and some ministers in the Kaneshie Area, including Pastor Paul Danso (Kaneshie Area Secretary), Pastor Adu Gyamfi Donkor, Pastor David Oppong, Prophet J. E. Ameyaw (Rtd.), and Apostle Samuel Ansong (Rtd.).

Also present were Mrs. Elizabeth Osei Asante (Wife of Kaneshie Area Head), ministers’ wives, as well as some officers in the Darkuman Nyamekye District.

Speaking at the event, Apostle Asante, who is also an Executive Council Member of the Church, acknowledged all those who have generously contributed to the project since 1999.

He added, “It is good to have a beautiful edifice, but if the people worshipping in the edifice are not holy, then the beautiful edifice is not necessary.”

Exhorting the congregants, Apostle Asante spoke on the topic: “Repositioning The Local Church In Holiness For Maximum Impact.”

Referencing Leviticus 11:41-45, he explained that God urged the Israelites to consecrate themselves by not eating certain creatures which He deemed unclean, stressing that going contrary to this directive made one unclean.

With supportive scripture from Galatians 5:19-21, he advised believers to eschew the desires of the flesh which God abhors, saying: “This is parallel to the instruction God gave to Moses in Leviticus.”

Apostle Asante defined holiness as “being absolutely pure and separated from all sin and evil. God is holy, and He expects us to be holy.”

Quoting Ephesians 1:4-5, he noted that believers have been reborn into sonship through Jesus Christ, hence believers cannot continue to sin.

“When God’s holiness meets with our holiness, the power of God will be exhibited in our churches,” he concluded.

The Emmanuel Assembly church building project was funded with grants received from the Church’s Headquarters, Kaneshie Area, District, and offerings raised by the Local Assembly.

Major Kwadwo Octhere-Prempeh, an Elder of the Burma Camp Worship Centre of The Church of Pentecost, has emerged as the Overall Best graduate from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College. 

He won the Honour Graduate and the Chief of Army Staff Awards for Senior Command and Staff Course 44, during a graduation ceremony held recently in Accra. He also graduated with a Master of Science in Defence and International Politics. 

The course (Senior Division Staff Course) is the highest Military course for commissioned officers in Ghana. It consists of military tactical and operational courses and a Master’s degree in Defence and International Politics, which is accredited by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

The Senior Division Staff Course spans one year. The just-ended course was the 44th intake since its inception. The course was assembled in August 2022 with 85 officers selected from the Ghana Armed Forces and other African countries.

Congratulations to Elder (Major) Octhere-Prempeh for the honours and for making the church proud.

Apostle Gyesi-Addo Accomplishes Mission As He Retires From Active Ministry

The immediate past International Missions Director (IMD) of The Church of Pentecost and current Area Head for Haatso, Apostle Emmanuel Gyesi-Addo, has been celebrated for accomplishing his calling and ending it in splendour.

Apostle Emmanuel Gyesi-Addo and his wife, Mama Elizabeth, officially retired from the full-time ministry of The Church of Pentecost on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at a glamorous service held in his honour at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC)-Atomic, Accra, after 32 years of fruitful ministry.

The mammoth service was officiated by the Chairman of the church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.

Present to assist the Chairman were the Madina Area Head, Apostle Martin Seth Appiah; some Members of the Executive Council, including Apostle Yaw Adjei-Kwarteng (Bompata Area Head), Apostle Ousmane Patinde Zabre (Burkina Faso National Head), Apostle Vincent Anane Denteh (PEMEM Director), Apostle Mike Etrue (Koforidua Area Head), Apostle Sylvester Arhin (Tamale Area Head), the General Secretary-elect, Apostle Samuel Gyau Obuobi, and Executive Council Member-elect, Apostle Dr Dieudonne Komla Nuekpe.

Others were the former Chairman of the church, Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah (Rtd); former General Secretaries of the church – Apostles Rigwell Ato Addison, Albert Amoah and Dr Alfred Koduah, all now retired; the General Secretary of GPCC, Apostle Immanuel Tettey, National Heads from various nations across the world; traditional leaders, among others.

Profile

Apostle Emmanuel Gyesi-Addo was born in Accra on December 26, 1958, to Mr Ferdinand Gyesi-Addo (now of blessed memory) and Madam Grace Afful. His parents hailed from Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region.

He started basic education at Nyakrom Methodist Primary School in 1964 and completed in 1973 and, after that, continued at the Sackey-Adoo Secretarial Institute, Accra, in 1974.

Through self-tuition and part-time courses in various institutions in Ghana and abroad, he obtained the following certificates: Diploma with distinction in Bilingual Secretaryship (Agence d’Or, Accra), French Diploma in Business Management (French Chamber of Commerce/Alliance Française), Certificate in French (Advanced), Certificates in Records Management; Office Management and Administration (from Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI), Accra), among other certificates.

He also holds a degree in Theology from Pentecost University. Born and bred in the Methodist Church, where he was once a chorister, he became a member of The Church of Pentecost, Darkuman Assembly, when he joined his father in Accra in March 1974 and baptised by immersion in May 1975.

He was employed in April 1975 as a typist with the British India Insurance Company (which later became Zenith Assurance Company) in Accra, rising through the ranks to become the company’s Administrative Secretary until he resigned in 1985.

He then joined the Bank for Housing and Construction (BHC) Headquarters in Accra, where he served as the Administrative Secretary to two World Bank consultants newly seconded to Ghana.

After a brief but exciting spell with the bank, he resigned in 1986 and joined the giant American Pharmaceutical Company – then known as Sterling Products Ghana Limited. He resigned in July 1991 due to his call into the full-time ministry.

He joined the full-time ministry in 1991, and he was posted to the Headquarters as the first Administrative Secretary and Personal Assistant to the first IMD, Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah, and served concurrently at Twereboa Assembly in the Odorkor District as the first Resident Minister from 1991-1994.

He served in the following stations:

Agona Nsaba (1994-1995), Senegal – Missionary and National Head (1995-1998), Togo and Niger: Missions Office Assignments (1998-1999), Switzerland – Missionary and National Head (1999-2002), PIWC, Tema (2002-2003), Tema South, now Greenwich Meridian District (2003-2007), Gabon – Missionary and National Head (2007–2011), International Missions Director (2011-2021), and Haatso as Area Head (2021-2023).

Testimonies

The Haatso Area Presbytery, in their testimony, said that Apostle Gyesi-Addo exudes love and humility with a consistent work ethic and believes in all-inclusiveness and broad consultation.

The Area Women’s Ministry described Mrs Elizabeth Gyesi-Addo ass bold, generous, someone who loves people, and always wants to share whatever she has with others.

The Area Pastorate, on their part, said Apostle Gyesi-Addo demonstrated wisdom, confidence, a peaceful heart and a remarkable ability to advance the work of God in the Area.

The General Council also noted that Apostle Gyesi-Addo exemplified a spirit of humility, love, and steadfastness in the Lord’s service.

Describing him as a missionary par excellence, the General Council stated: “Apostle Gyesi-Addo is among the awesome missionaries of our time whom the Lord has raised to serve His purpose in his generation.”

It added: “His dedication and impact have been profound, leaving an indelible mark on the growth and expansion of God’s Kingdom throughout Ghana and other nations.”

Sermon

The PEMEM Director, Apostle Vincent Anane Denteh, preaching the sermon on the topic, “A Mission Accomplished Soldier Deserves Well Done” based on Matthew 25:14-30, among other scriptures, stated: “Today, we are celebrating another remarkable soldier of the cross. Like the Apostle Paul, Apostle Emmanuel Gyesi-Addo has also fought the good fight, run the race, and is still keeping the faith.”

He called on believers to keep working to accomplish the mission which God has called them into and remain faithful to Him in order to accomplish their task.

With cheerful smiles and hands lifted towards the sky, Apostle David Tettey Tekper, the Achimota Area Head of The Church of Pentecost, and his wife Matilda gave glory to God as they gracefully bowed out of active ministerial service.

A retirement service took place today at the Achimota Central Assembly auditorium to honour the gallant soldiers of the Cross, who have steadfastly served God and The Church of Pentecost for 37 years in full-time ministry.

Chaired by the General Secretary of the Church, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, the event welcomed a host of dignitaries including Apostle Samuel Osei Asante (Executive Council Member and Kaneshie Area Head), Apostle Isaac Nii Kotei Djani (Techiman Area Head and Executive Council Member), Apostle Amos Jimmy Markin (Evangelism Ministry Director and Executive Council Member-elect), Apostle Dr. Philip Osei-Korsah (Counseling Ministry Director), Apostle Ebenezer Hagan (Youth Ministry Director) and Apostle Patrick Aseyoro (Suhum Area Head).

Apostles James Tetteh, Abraham Swanzy, Dr. Christian Tsekpoe, Samuel Gakpetor, John Obeng Kesse, Emmanuel Kojo Aidoo, and others were also present.

The service was marked by joyous scenes, with congregants joining the couple in jubilant praises. The General Secretary, as usual, led the way with his iconic handclapping.

The sermon, fittingly titled “Finishing the Race Set Before You By God” and delivered by Apostle S. O. Asante, resonated powerfully with the retirement service of a man who has faithfully run the race of ministry for nearly four decades.

In his sermon, based on 2 Timothy 4:6-8, Apostle Asante explained that, at the twilight of his ministry, Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to strive to also finish his race.

Referring to Numbers 8:23-26, he stressed that there is a time of rest from labor for everyone, further noting that, in addition to the statutory retirement age that brings an end to one’s labour, old age, sickness, and death could also bring an end to one’s service.

“Therefore, if there is anything we can do for God, we need to do it now and work at it well with all our strength,” he stressed.

Quoting Acts 13:36, Apostle Asante reminded Christians that God is not just interested in them finishing their race, but that they fulfill the purpose He has for their life.

The Christian life, he underscored, is a race set before the believer by God, adding that God desires for His children to live as true Christians without compromise.

“Since you have chosen to be a Christian, then be a Christian. So make sure you become the Christian God wants you to become and bring glory to Him,” he said.

Apostle Asante congratulated the retiring couple for ending their service (race) gloriously and urged the Church to emulate them by serving God’s purpose until the end.

“As a Christian, know that God has set a race before you, and He expects you to finish well,” he concluded.

Apostle David Tekper left his role as an Assistant Superintendent of Education in 1986 to heed the call into full-time ministry with The Church of Pentecost. His ministerial journey began in the Obawale District and took him through nine other stations, including Accra New Town District, Agona Swedru Area as Area Head, Kete Krachi Area, Hohoe Area, Cape Coast Area, and finally, Achimota Area. He also served as a missionary of the Church in Lesotho and as a missionary attaché in the USA.

Among other roles and appointments, Apostle Tekper also served as Secretary to the Pension Board from 1996 to 1999 and was an Executive Council Member of the Church from 2015 to 2020.

As part of the event, the Achimota Area presbytery, the Area pastorate, and the Women’s Ministry gave glowing testimonies about their outgoing Area Head and his wife, praising their attributes and contributions to the Area’s growth in the past five years.

They also presented the couple with citations acknowledging their meritorious service in the Achimota Area and The Church of Pentecost.

The General Council of The Church of Pentecost also eulogized the retiring couple for their exemplary service to God and unwavering loyalty to the Church.

The testimony, read on behalf of the Council by Apostle Nii Kotei Djani, described Apostle Tekper as a team player who relates well to his fellow ministers within and outside the Church.

“Our senior brother is a versatile leader skilled in developing other leaders, especially young people. He has an eye for identifying potential in the youth, many of whose skills he has helped develop,” it further read.

The Council also commended Mrs. Matilda Tekper for serving as a strong pillar behind her husband’s ministry and extended well wishes to the retiring couple.

Apostle Kumi-Larbi presented a Certificate of Service and a Retired Ministers’ License to Apostle Tekper on behalf of the Church.

In response, Apostle Tekper expressed heartfelt gratitude to all, particularly past and present leaders of the Church and their relatives, who in diverse ways supported them in their ministerial journey, after which the General Secretary, together with the apostles present, led the gathering in praying for the couple as they formally proceed on retirement.

The well-attended event also had in attendance Mrs Mary Nyamekye (Wife of the Chairman), Mrs. Rose Dansoa Kumi-Larbi (Wife of the General Secretary), Mrs. Grace Opoku Onyinah (Wife of the immediate-past Chairman), Mrs. Korkor Obuobi (Wife of the General Secretary-Elect),  the pastorate, their spouses, officers, and members of the Achimota Area, alongside scores of retired ministers, relatives, and well-wishers.

The mortal remains of Mrs Florence Odi Walker, who was part of the formative years of The Church of Pentecost, have been interred after an impressive funeral service held in her honour at the Forecourt of the State House, Accra, on Saturday, August 19, 2023.

Mrs Odi Walker, who died at aged 101, was the wife of Apostle Fred Diabene Walker, a one-time Executive Council Member of The Church of Pentecost, who was one of the pillars of the church who supported the Founder of the church, Rev. James McKeown, to pioneer the church.

She is survived by six children, one of whom is Apostle Dr Daniel Walker, an Executive Council Member of the church, 29 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, all playing key roles in the church and society.

The funeral service was officiated by the Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, assisted by the General Secretary, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, the La Area Head, Apostle Dr Dieudonne Komla Nuekpe, and members of the Executive Council, as well as heads of the church, retired ministers and serving ministers.

Also gracing the occasion were the Chief of Staff, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah (former Chairman of the church), chiefs, relations, and friends from all walks of life.

Consoling the family, Apostle Nyamekye, on behalf of The Church of Pentecost, prayed to God to encourage them. He also thanked them for their contributions to the church. 

Biography

Mrs Florence Adjoa Odi Walker was born on June 19, 1922, to Osikani Kwabena Larbi of Adukrom-Akuapem Akweside Clan and Maame Lydia Adjoa Okyerebea, also of Adukrom-Akuapem. She was born into the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. In 1940 when she was 18 years old, she was confirmed into the Presbyterian Church at Adukrom. 

She had her primary education at Adukrom Presbyterian School and completed Middle School at the Presbyterian Girls School, Agogo, in Ashanti. After school, she relocated to Koforidua to learn dressmaking and worked as a qualified seamstress at Koforidua for a few years. A colleague seamstress, the daughter of the Methodist Church minister at Adukrom, introduced her to The Church of Pentecost, then known as the Ghana Apostolic Church. She was baptised in 1945 by Pastor Anaman (now of blessed memory).

She got married in 1948 to the late Pastor Frederick Diabene Walker at Koforidua. Pastor James McKeown (Founder of the church) officiated the marriage. 

She and her husband established several branches of the church on the Akuapem Ridge. In 1949, they were transferred to Obo-Kwahu. After three years of service, they were transferred to Kumasi in 1952. In 1956, Mama Florence and her husband were transferred to Kadjebi and served for five years till 1961, when they were transferred to Akim Oda. Their next duty station was Sekondi-Takoradi, where her husband was a Regional Head from 1966 to 1969. From 1969, the Walkers served at Sunyani as regional head in the then Brong-Ahafo Region until 1973, when they were transferred to Kumasi as the Ashanti Regional.

In 1976, she joined her husband to begin mission work in Liberia. They spent six years nurturing the church in Liberia until 1982 when they were recalled and posted to Cape Coast. They ended their ministry in Koforidua, where they served from 1984 to 1988 and retired from active service. Mama Florence lost her husband, Apostle Fred D. Walker, in October 1988, soon after retirement. She served the church in various ways at the Dzorwulu Assembly in Accra, where they settled after retirement.

Tributes

The children in their tributes described their mother as a wonderful mother whose immense care and tremendous support were unparallel, saying, “Indeed, words cannot describe the kind of mother she was to each of us. She brought us up in the fear of God and instilled discipline in us.”

In its tribute, the General Council of The Church of Pentecost said Mrs Florence Odi Walker was a blessing to the church and Ghana, indicating that her transition to the eternal realm is indeed cherished in the eyes of the Lord, for she lived and fulfilled her purpose as a faithful servant in her generation.

“As a woman of unshakeable faith, Mrs Walker embodied the roles of a prophetess, evangelist, teacher, and intercessor for the saints. Her life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to God and humanity,” it said.

It added: “Mrs Florence Odi Walker and her late husband, Apostle Fred Diabene Walker, played pivotal roles as pioneers within The Church of Pentecost. They stood side by side with the church’s Founder, Rev. James McKeown, during its formative years when it was known as the Gold Coast Apostolic Church.”

Sermon

Preaching the sermon at the service, Apostle Michael Collins Asiedu (Rtd.), a former Evangelism Ministry Director of the church, spoke on the topic, “Look to the rock and the quarry; remember your leaders” based on Isaiah 51:1-2; Hebrews 13:7-9.

He described Mrs Walker as a great woman because she made a maximum impact globally, raising great men and women across the world. 

He called on the church to remember and follow her legacy and godly values, saying, “the Walkers have left us a heritage, and we have a corporate responsibility to protect it.”
