The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has admonished politicians and all persons in leadership positions to think about tomorrow in all they do.
He made this admonishment at the opening session of the Younger Generation Politicians and Leaders Conference held at the Pentecost Convention Centre on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
Themed “Tomorrow Today: The Place of the Young Politician/Leader in Ghana’s Moral Vision and National Development,” the conference brought together emerging leaders to discuss their pivotal role in shaping the future of Ghana.
Delivering the sermon at the service, Apostle Nyamekye lamented the short-term thinking prevalent among current leaders, urging a shift towards long-term policies that prioritise national prosperity over electoral victories.
He referenced 1 Samuel 8:19, drawing parallels between historical leadership in Israel and contemporary expectations of politicians.
He expressed concern that many young leaders today seem more focused on personal gain rather than serving their communities. “Politics seems to be an easy way to make money,” he remarked, cautioning that such motivations can undermine the integrity essential for effective leadership.
Chairman Nyamekye emphasised that true leadership is rooted in responsibility—addressing public concerns, solving problems, and meeting community needs. He warned that without these qualities, leaders risk becoming mere figureheads.
“Politics makes you a public official and cannot hide,” he stated, highlighting the vulnerability that comes with public service and the necessity for integrity and skillful governance.
He highlighted the church’s vested interest in politics, asserting that the church’s mission extends beyond spiritual salvation to societal transformation.
“If the church cannot bring transformation to the nation, then it is of no purpose,” he declared.
He urged young politicians to view their roles as a ministry dedicated to fostering national development through ethical decision-making.
He called for a new generation of leaders who prioritise societal betterment over immediate electoral success.
“The most important factor in the development of every nation is the nature of its citizens,” he stated, emphasising that character and integrity must be at the forefront of leadership.
