The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has sensitised young people on how to achieve academic excellence and professional development.

She was speaking on ‘Excelling In Your Academic, Professional And Career Life’ on Friday, December 3, 2025, at the ongoing PENSA Ghana Conference at the Pentecost Convention Centre, Gomoa Fetteh.

Professor Amfo emphasised that academic excellence transcends mere grades. She, therefore, urged students to cultivate a genuine love for learning and commit to personal growth.

‘Success in academia is rooted in interest, effective study skills, and time management,’ she stated, highlighting the importance of finding one’s passion rather than succumbing to external pressures regarding course selection.

Addressing the critical topic of time management, she noted that time is a finite resource that, once spent, cannot be regained. To manage time effectively, she recommended setting clear goals by utilising the SMART method to define both short and long-term objectives, prioritising tasks to focus on what is most important, and creating a schedule to organise daily activities for maximum productivity.

Additionally, the university don suggested breaking tasks into smaller steps to make large projects more manageable, setting time limits for tasks to encourage efficiency by creating urgency, and eliminating distractions by identifying and minimizing interruptions.

Professor Amfo encouraged students to adjust their strategies regularly while practicing self-care to maintain physical and mental well-being.

She also highlighted the importance of seeking continuous learning opportunities through internships and volunteer work, which help build relevant professional skills.

Ending her presentation, Professor Amfo reinforced the importance of maintaining a balanced life. She advised the youth to work hard and smart while nurturing their spiritual growth and health.

She concluded by urging all to understand their career path and what it takes to progress, admonishing them to remain committed to lifelong learning.
