East Legon New Tunnel Opens To Traffic

Commuters using the East Legon tunnel to either East Legon or Spintex can now heave a sigh of relief as the new tunnel has finally been opened to traffic.

The 8.5-meter wide tunnel replaces the old 4-meter wide tunnel, which caused heavy traffic during rush hour because it could only carry one stream of oncoming vehicles.

Road users earlier complained bitterly about the massive gridlock there during rush hour and the delay in completion of the new tunnel.

Citi News’ Caleb Kudah, who’s been reporting on the project since it started, was one of the early users who took a ride on the newly opened tunnel.

He reported that the usual traffic often encountered from Airport residential area to the tunnel has reduced drastically.

“The tunnel has been opened to traffic. That means that oncoming vehicles both from Spintex and Adjiriganor are able to drive through without one having to stop for the other to pass- a case with the old tunnel which was only 4.4 meters wide.

“This time, we have an eight-meter wide tunnel which has been constructed and opened to traffic. That means that if you close around 4 pm, for instance, you don’t need to rush out because traffic all around the Airport residential area has reduced completely.”

Caleb added that “road markings are expected to be fixed on that particular stretch to aid safety for motorists.”
