Mrs Evelyn Nyame, wife of the National Coordinator of the Ministry to Persons With Disabilities (MPWDs) of The Church of Pentecost, has emphasised the importance of good health of parents catering for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

Speaking to parents of PWDs at the 2024 Family Retreat held for PWDs and their families at Ho in the Volta Region on ‘The Importance of Hygiene,’ she highlighted how hygiene and overall well-being are essential components of living a Christian life.

She explained that the word ‘hygiene,’ which was derived from the Greek word ‘hygies,’ meaning ‘healthy’ or ‘sound,’ plays a significant role in the well-being of people.

She maintained that personal and environmental hygiene are key to maintaining a good health.

According to Mrs Nyame, personal hygiene involves caring for and grooming the body – keeping hair, skin, teeth, ears, hands, nails, and feet clean and healthy. She, therefore, stressed the need for making personal care a daily routine.

She further explained that hygiene goes beyond appearance. For example, she said, a dirty skin can lead to clogged pores, affecting skin health, while advising against the use of skin-bleaching creams as they increase the risk of skin cancer.

The MPWDs Coordinator’s wife also discussed proper dental hygiene, urging individuals to take their time brushing their teeth, using up-and-down and circular motions, and brushing the tongue thoroughly. She discouraged putting objects into the ears, recommending medical care, when necessary, as the ears, eyes, and nose are interconnected.

She encouraged parents to maintain cleanliness, not only for themselves but also for their children, warning that germs on unclean hands can lead to illnesses such as pneumonia, hepatitis A, and other infections.

In her presentation, Mrs Evelyn Nyame shared a powerful message about God’s desire for His children to be healthy, drawing from scripture. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God has a plan for every life, and living in good health is part of that plan, she stated.

She also introduced ‘God’s Plan’ for health, using the acronym G.O.D.S.P.L.A.N.:

  • G: Godly trust
  • O: Open air
  • D: Daily rest
  • S: Sunshine
  • P: Peace of mind
  • L: Lots of water
  • A: Adequate exercise
  • N: Nutrition

According to Mrs. Nyame, this divine health programme meets every requirement for a balanced life.

She said: ‘God offers this plan as a life-saving gift, and embracing it ensures not only physical health but also spiritual fulfilment.’

Mrs Nyame highlighted the importance of emotional and mental health, noting that worry, stress, and depression lead to illness and decay.

In line with Proverbs 17:22 and 14:30, she reminded the parents that a joyful heart and peace of mind are critical to maintaining overall health.

She ended by stressing that trusting in God strengthens the immune system, enabling believers to live fulfilling and healthy lives.
