The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has highlighted the critical importance of prayer in the life of the believer.
According to him, in Luke 11:1, where the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, they were not interested in the visible miracles or successes of Jesus’ ministry, but in the foundational practice (prayer) that sustained Him.
He said this on Wednesday, October 29, 2024, in a sermon titled, “Teach Us How to Pray,” during a gathering of elders at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) – Kokomlemle, Accra.
“To pray is the greatest thing one can do, especially for those seeking revival in their lives,” Apostle Nyamekye stated, stressing on the role of prayer in personal and spiritual transformation.
Referencing Mark 1, Apostle Nyamekye pointed out that Jesus often woke up early to pray, not out of mere discipline, but because He understood the need for prayer.
“Why would Jesus, the Son of God, rise so early to pray?” Apostle Nyamekye asked. “Because He knew that He needed to be sustained by the Father.”
Quoting Isaiah 42:1-2, the Chairman explained that Jesus was upheld and sustained by God, driven by His need for divine strength.
“In these solitary places, God molds His people, not just to make them great preachers, but to prepare them for effective ministry,” he disclosed.
The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) President further stressed that God’s anointing does not come upon machines but upon human beings.
“When many people pray with you, they share your burden, but God’s true men and women are formed in the closet,” he added, referencing Matthew 6:5-6, where Jesus encourages private prayer.
He warned against the dangers of neglecting personal devotion, saying, “Lack of closeness with the ‘Master’ can lead to spiritual leanness and ineffectual ministry.”
He urged believers to spend meaningful time with God, stating that short devotions weaken spiritual vitality, hinder progress, and undermine the foundations of a vibrant spiritual life.
Apostle Nyamekye encouraged believers to prioritise prayer and cultivate an intimate relationship with God, as it is the key to sustaining their spiritual journey and ministry.
Present at the meeting were Apostle Dr. Dieudonne Komla Nuekpe (La Area Head), Apostle Dr Col. Benjamin G. Kumi-Woode (Director of Religious Affairs, Ghana Armed Forces), among others.
