A former General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Apostle Ekow Badu Wood, has urged retired ministers and their spouses to embrace companionship, financial planning, and purposeful living to enjoy a fulfilling retirement.

He made the call during a presentation on ‘Marriage, Companionship, and Support in Retirement’ on the opening day of the Seminar for Retired Ministers, Wives, and Widows at the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC), Gomoa Fetteh, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

Apostle Wood noted that old age, experience, and godliness do not exempt retired couples from marital challenges. He explained that many relationship issues remain unresolved throughout life and therefore require patience, understanding, and mutual accommodation.

Drawing lessons from the lives of Abraham and Sarah as well as Adam and Eve, he encouraged couples to accept their differences and strive to live in peace and harmony.

“Smile at the storms, take it easy, and endure with kindness the challenges that come in marriage, even in retirement,” he advised.

Describing retirement as the “golden age of life,” Apostle Wood said it is a season for harvesting what one has sown over the years. He stressed the importance of healthy living habits, noting that the quality of one’s retirement is often influenced by earlier choices regarding diet, rest, and general lifestyle.

“If you were kind to your body in the past, your body will be kind to you in retirement,” he stated, while highlighting the importance of adequate sleep and moderation.

On financial preparedness, Apostle Wood distinguished between retirement and pension, cautioning that many people reach retirement age without adequate pension arrangements. He advised couples not to depend solely on their children for financial support and recommended transparency in family finances, including giving both spouses access to financial resources. “Retirement without pension is an agony,” he remarked.

He also encouraged retirees to remain socially active by engaging in meaningful projects, maintaining friendships, and spending quality time with family members.

Touching on marital intimacy, Apostle Wood emphasised the need for affection and emotional closeness between spouses in retirement, noting that while the body may change with age, the desire for companionship often remains.

He concluded by urging participants to deepen their relationship with God, stressing that spiritual growth remains essential for a rewarding and purposeful retirement.
