Theme Texts: Hebrews 13: 20-21 and Ephesians 4:11-12

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen (Heb. 13: 20-21, NIV).

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up (Eph. 4:11-12, NIV).

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes (Eph. 6:10-11 NIV).

The overarching theme for the Vision 2023 agenda has been, “Possessing the Nations: Equipping the Church to Transform every Sphere of Society with the values and principles of the Kingdom of God”.

Each year, we set goals to guide us towards the results we intend to achieve. These anticipated results or goals are in turn translated into annual themes. The purpose of these annual themes is to provide a sense of direction to the church towards the realization of the overall goal of the Vision 2023 agenda.

So far, we have dealt with three of such annual themes, namely, “I will Build my Church”, “A Glorious Church to Possess the Nations” and “A Glorious Church Revived to Possess the Nations”. From these themes, the church has been made to appreciate her dual responsibility and the call to build a glorious church; a church which is radiant and without stain or wrinkle; a church which is revived, holy and blameless; a church whose testimony will be credible before the watching world. These themes without doubt have drawn us many steps forward towards our overall goal.

Having come this far, I believe it is now time to prepare to unleash the church into the world to bring the desired effects in the various spheres of the society. The church enters the world in two fronts – first as an army in an enemy’s territory, which calls for putting on every available defensive mechanism for battle  and second, as an agent or ambassador of the Kingdom of God who goes into the world with the values and principles of the Kingdom, such as  the principle of work and the dignity of labour, service, respect for all, honesty, kindness, love, faithfulness, truthfulness, forgiveness, contentment, humility, integrity in word and deed and moral uprightness to generate the desired transformation.

We shall endeavour to diligently equip the members to accomplish both tasks, as we prepare to unleash them into the world. However, in the coming year, we shall focus on one of the tasks, which is, the church as an army in an enemy’s territory. The other shall be considered later. The theme for the year 2022 therefore is “Equipping the Church as an Army to Possess the Nations” (Heb. 13:20-21, Eph. 4:11-12, Eph. 6:10-11).

“Possessing or taking nations” is an ancient military phrase, which meant replacing the rule or reign of a nation with that of another through conquest. Relating this term to the Great Commission inspires us to raise an army of Christians who, being filled with the Holy Spirit and fully equipped with the knowledge of God’s word, will engage and transform their societies with Godly values and principles, wherever they are and in whatever they do, in order to win many for Christ and transform them into salt and light of the world.

This theme calls for vigorous and intentional equipping of the church to get every single member to assume the posture of an army of the Lord to take the nations. In doing this, we intend to use the metaphor of the armour of God to get our members to understand from the lenses  of scripture, the social, political and spiritual forces at work in the various spheres of society and to build their defenses against their onslaught. Our emphasis in the theme 2022, will be on equipping the church with the armour of God, rather than on spiritual warfare.

As an Army, Christians need to be equipped with the full armour of God so that they can withstand the tricks and schemes of the enemy. Wobbly Christians who have no firm foothold in Christ are an easy prey for Satan. This armour is forged and furnished by God Himself, and He invites us to put them on. It must be worn night and day; we must walk, work and sleep in them. The Army of God must never relax their vigilance or else they are not true soldiers of Christ. They must fight till the kingdoms of the world become the Kingdom of our God. Every generation of Christians should be concerned with what values and standards are going to rule their world or determine their culture. And our generation should not disappoint God.

To help us delve into the theme well, the following topics have been selected to guide the teachings and activities of the church in the year, 2022.

  1. The Church as the equipping centre in carrying out the Great Commission; the possessing the nations agenda
  2. Equipping the church with the Word of God
  3. Mobilising the squads (the army) for effective impact in the world.
  4. Equipping the church to put on the belt of truth.
  5. The new creation and the possessing the nations agenda
  6. Righteousness; the authority of the Kingdom.
  7. The power of Faith in Possessing the nations.
  8. The Power of the Gospel of salvation.
  9. The ministry of intercessory prayer.

May the Lord continue to be with us and grant us the needed grace to carry this theme through to its fulfilling end. Amen!
