YOU CANNOT SERVE BOTH GOD AND MONEY

Matthew 6:19-24; Luke 16:1-15

Exposition

The word serve in Greek douleuo means to be a slave to or be in bondage to someone. To serve also means to work for someone with all your mind and strength. It also means to worship or to render homage to someone or something superior. You cannot serve both God and money at the same time.

In Matthew 6:19-24, Jesus Christ taught His disciples to store up their treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy and thieves cannot break in and steal. Jesus explained that wherever your treasure is, there your heart will be. Both God and Money are treasures and masters. In verse 24 of Matthew chapter 6, Jesus clearly stated that, “No one can serve two masters.” You either love one and hate the other or you are committed and devoted to one and despise the other. If God is your master, you will love Him with all your heart, mind, soul and body and also obey him. You cannot be a “slave” to both God and money. You must choose one as your master.

Money is good. I pray for you that you will get money. Nevertheless, you must not make money your master because you cannot serve both God and money. Making money your master will deprive you of your full reliance, commitment and obedience to God. You will always submit to the commands of money which will lead you to hell. Money will always put pressure on you to do what God hates. The good news is that, if you make God your master, He will grant you the grace to control money to use it to please Him. When you make God your master, money will become your “slave or servant”. Make Jesus your Lord and master today!!

Prayer Guide: Lord Jesus, I thank you for saving me. Please Jesus, grant me the grace to live a godly life full of contentment. Help me to love you more than my money and wealth in Jesus’ name. Amen
