Exposition
Money is needed in our everyday life. We need money to pay our school fees, to purchase books, to pay our utilities, to buy clothes and provisions. Others also need money to start a business, to build a house and even to get married. Money is indispensable. The Preacher said, “money answers everything” (Ecclesiastes 10:19).
However, Hebrews 13:5 states that “keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (NIV). Apostle Paul also admonished Timothy not to love money but to live a godly life of contentment which is a great gain. To love money is to place or put money ahead of God in everything you do. Having money is not bad but loving money is evil. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. The love of money will make you covetous. The love of money will kill your spiritual life and growth. The love of money has brought evil into the world. It is the root of all evil. The love of money has made people make a shipwreck of their faith.
The love of money has made people inflict themselves with many grieves and pain. Many young men and women have engaged themselves in illicit behaviour like wee smoking, prostitution, robbery, ‘sakawa’, etc. because of love of money. Scripture says that because people want to get rich quickly, they fall into temptations, traps and into many foolish and harmful desires, which lead to ruin and destruction.
You must live your life free from the love of money. You brought nothing into the world and you cannot take anything out of the world. God has assured you that He will never leave you nor forsake you. He is there as a good shepherd to provide all your needs. Live a life of contentment. Trust in the Lord and work hard for God will not leave you nor forsake you.
