Exposition
Having known some of the menace of betting, let’s delve into the ways we can abort and abate sports betting. Whether you are a victim or not, the nations can be possessed when we come to the knowledge of what we ought to do to stay pure.
The first counsel from the main text is to take heed and beware of covetousness. Covetousness is the excessive desire for the possession of something, especially for wealth. Betting is born out of covetousness, the desire to make wealth and have money in abundance. Based on the counsel to take heed and beware of covetousness, betting must be avoided by you as a Christian. You cannot afford to be adamant to beware or heed wise counsel. If there is no danger in betting, you wouldn’t be counselled so.
Verse 11 of 1 Timothy 6 also adds a caution to how well one can abate betting; “But you, man of God, avoid all these things…” Betting is ungodly, and must be avoided. You should not give any room for a try or compromise. In addition, “strive for righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” If you can be patient with God, He will bring you to your wealthy place (Psalm 66:12). Betting is impatience for God’s riches. Let’s trust in the promises of God in all patience, and He will give us the desires of our heart, for silver and gold is the Lord’s.
