SUSTAINING YOUR SPIRITUALITY: THE ACT OF HOLINESS

1 Peter 1:14-16

Exposition

We thank God for yet another bright day given to us to come before Him and have illumination in His word. Sustaining your spirituality calls for the act of your holiness, right standing with the Lord. Holiness is not something just for Pastors or Missionaries or Church leaders. God calls all people to holiness. 1 Peter 1 says, “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy”. (1 Peter 1:15-16) God is holy. He is pure. He is without sin. And he calls you to be like him. Holiness is the habit of being of one mind with God. It is the habit of agreeing in God’s judgment: hating what He hates and loving what He loves.

If you want to sustain your spirituality, then seek to be holy. Seek to be like Christ, because God said “You shall be holy; for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44). Seek to be like Christ and live for Christ and Him alone. 1 Peter 2:9 says “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

From 1 Peter 1:14-16, Peter calls the readers of his first epistle to a life of holiness and in three verses, Peter tells you why you should be holy:

(1) You are to be holy so that you are obedient to the Word of God which commands it. Peter’s call to holiness is but a repetition of a command given long before by God Himself to the nation Israel: “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” You should be holy because God commands it. To do otherwise is to be disobedient.

(2) You are to be holy to be like God, your Father, who called you to be holy. Those commanded to be holy are the children of God. Never is it assumed that unbelievers can or will strive for holiness. Only His children are able to do so, by His grace and through His Spirit. The “saints” are God’s children, whom He has called to be holy. (3) You are to be holy by imitating God. You are to be holy because God is holy. Jesus once put it thus: “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). This means you must first come to know God, and then, by His grace, seek to conduct yourselves in a manner that imitates Him.

Prayer Guide: Pray for grace to walk in holiness and live wholly for the Lord.

Memory Verse For This Week: Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV) – “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit”.
