Exposition

God uses men to raise men while the devil also uses men to bring men down. You need to submit to the mentorship of the people that God will bring your way to help you mature in your walk with Him. Identifying and following men/women of honour who have set the pace, run the race, and walked with God (as long as they followed Christ) is a key to knowing God. Apostle Paul puts it well here — Join in imitating me, brothers, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. (Philippians 3:17 HCSB)

Apostle Paul admonishes the person whose quest is to know God to imitate him, just as he also imitates Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1). To the church in Philippi, he tasked them to Meditate on these things and do them – the things which they learned and received and heard and saw in him, that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of virtue and a good report.

The things learned (Christian practices), the things received and heard (Christian blessings), and the things seen (Christian miracles) are not only to be meditated on, but they are to be done. Christianity is very practical. It is not a dead, dry, formal, human religion of rituals, outward form, and show, but a divine, living, vital, dynamic and liberating experience. If you want to know God, purpose in your heart to know Him fully. Follow keenly the exemplary life of mentors and with the help of the Holy Spirit, what you need to know about God will be revealed to you. Learn and imitate but copy wisely.
