Be A God-Chaser; The Example Of Enoch.

Scripture Reference: Genesis 5:1-24.

Exposition:

Our relevance as sons and daughters of the Most High God on earth is seen in our walk with him and not just our confessions. Many Christians today have mastered the liturgy but struggle with the synergy that exists between preaching and living out what we preach.

We have become procedural believers who are interested in how things should be done just as much as the Pharisees did in Jesus’ days and have thus fast forgotten the substance, which is in obedience and dedication to the word of God. (c.f. Mathew 15:1- 20) One biblical example of a God-chaser that we can learn from is Enoch.

In our reading today, we see a recount of the generations that preceded Enoch right from the time of Adam. Read v.3-20 again and take note of the years each person lived and count the number of times the phrase “and he died” appeared. They lived so many years spanning centuries and yet the end was that they died. However, out of the tall list, there was one man who did not die. “Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.” v.24. He had the least age but the most impact.

Note that Enoch had other sons and daughters suggesting that he lived on earth as any human being will ordinarily do. He was a family man, a father, a husband, and probably a worker. see v.22. However, he changed the narrative. He chose to pursue after God and consequently, God took him away. What a narrative!

How could Enoch have achieved this feat in his generation where sin was on the increase? God-chasers are friends of God and not friends of the world. Their thoughts are on heavenly things and not on earthly things. (read Colossians 3:2) They make an uncompromising resolve to follow and serve God at all cost. What an example!

Prayer Guide: Dear God, how I long to walk with you all the days of my life, so help me to walk with you in holiness and in purity in Jesus’ name.
