Exposition
It is the Lord Jesus Christ who gives us the strength to become wealthy. Money or wealth will not come to you if you sit idly without doing any meaningful work. There are many graduates who are unemployed and searching for jobs. Others too are at their various workplaces but are not working hard and effectively. Yet they are expecting to be rich. In Proverbs 6:6-11, the wise man Solomon admonished the sluggard to consider or learn the ways of the ant and be wise. The ant has no commander, ruler or overseer, yet it works very hard to store its food in summer and gathers its food at harvest time.
Anyone who does not work hard in times of planting cannot reap in the season of harvest. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest while you need to work hard, will result in poverty and scarcity. Proverbs 18:8 states that, “one who is slack in his work is a brother to one who destroys”. Anyone who does not work hard to get money is likened to a destroyer. Moses prayed to God in Psalm 90:17 for His favour to rest upon him and also to establish the work of his hands. God will only bless the work of our hands. As a young person, you need to find something to do and work hard. That is the only means you can get money.
These days, young people don’t want to do hard and effective work. They want to be rich overnight. Owing to that, many have resorted to all forms of betting, staking of lotto, ‘sakawa’, gambling, internet fraud, etc. The diligent hands will be blessed by the Lord. You can start your own business by identifying a need in your community. You must have a well-defined financial/investment plan which could be short, medium or long term. You must also control your spending habits. Any work you find your hands doing, do it wholeheartedly and the Lord will bless the work of your hands.
