Service With Integrity.

Scripture Reference: Matthew 20:20-28.

Exposition:

The motto of the Ghana Police Service is “Service with Integrity”. Coincidentally, that is our topic for today’s devotion.

Ghana was declared a Republic on 1st July, 1960 (62 years ago), following independence from British colonial rule on 6th March, 1957. As a Republic, we had our own constitution and voted for our own President. It was expected that Ghana would surge on the path of rapid growth and development.

However, that expectation was met with disappointment. Many analysts raised concerns that Ghana’s contemporaries such as Singapore with limited resources at the time recorded massive development.

The question many people ask is, Why? Among many reasons, some people who held key leadership positions did not serve with integrity. This has been projected as the reason Ghana recorded one coup after the other.

In our Scripture reading, James and John, the sons of Zebedee were privileged to be among the 12 disciples of Jesus. Their service in the ministry of Christ was confronted with integrity crisis. They conspired with their mother, Mrs Zebedee, to meet Jesus privately with one request: that in Jesus’ Kingdom, one of them will sit at the right hand of Jesus and the other at his left. When the other 10 disciples heard about this, they were angry with the two brothers. However, Jesus restored calm among the disciples. Sadly, the ulterior motives of these sons of Zebedee were revealed by their actions.

Service with Integrity requires that we will live above reproach in every role that we play. Let us not be in a hurry to enrich ourselves at the slightest opportunity at the expense of the state or the organization that we are working for. Even when it seems that no one is watching, let us ensure that our actions and demands give glory to God.
