DEALING WITH YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

Colossians 3:23-25; 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12.

Exposition:

Youth unemployment is a global crisis. The international labour organization estimates that there are close to 64 million unemployed youth worldwide and 145 million young workers living in poverty. In Ghana, for example statistics from the International Labour Organization (ILO) shows that the youth unemployment rate in Ghana between 1999 and 2020 was 9.46% it is likely to be higher now.

Due to unemployment, many young people are engaging in all kinds of dubious activities and lifestyle just to make ends meet or survive. Some engage in cybercrime, illegal trading of human parts, prostitution, armed robbery, gambling etc. The unemployed youth also has a feeling of unhappiness, frustrations and sometimes low self-esteem.

You may be a young person out there who has completed Pre-tertiary or Tertiary education or may even be a Masters Degree holder and still unemployed, so what do you do? I want to share with you some practical things you can do – Find something doing; it may not be related to your field of study in school, it may not be the best paying job, it may be below your expectation, but I will encourage you to do it.

Colossians 3:23-24 says whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Again Proverbs 14:23 says that “in all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to only to poverty.

Beloved you can do something about your unemployed situation. Pray to the Lord and start small with anything good that you can find. 1Thessalonians 4:11-12 says “And to aspire to live quietly and mind your own affairs and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one. Beloved trust fully in the Lord today.

Prayer Guide: Pray that God opens the doorway for gainful employment and business opportunities.

MEMORY VERSE FOR THIS WEEK: 1 Timothy 4:12-13 (NIV) - “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”
