Deaf & Blind Student Graduates From University

Miss Sylvia Abena Peprah, a member of The Church of Pentecost (COP), made history after becoming the first visually and hearing impaired student in Africa to graduate from the university.

Sylvia, who fellowships at Mampong Central Assembly in the Koforidua Area, received a full scholarship from the COP Headquarters to pursue a two-year diploma programme in Community-Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

She was one of the 16,489 students who graduated from the UEW in the 2017/2018 academic year during the university’s 24th Congregation held on October 17, 2019.

Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Rev. Father. Prof. Anthony Afful Broni singled out Sylvia for special praise saying that she has proved to Ghana and the world that the loss of both sight and hearing is not a barrier to attaining higher education.

He revealed that the university will support her by paying her accommodation and tuition fees for her post-diploma education.
