Communion Reminds God Of His Covenant With Believers – Apostle Kumi-Larbi

The General Secretary of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, has stated that the observance of the Lord’s Supper is not only to remind Christians of Christ’s atonement for their sins, but also remind God of His covenant with His people.

Apostle Kumi-Larbi said this on Sunday, September 2, 2018 when he preached on the topic: “Do This In Remembrance of Me” during a Communion Service at Dr. Thomas Wyatt Assembly in the Accra Newtown District. The service also marked Apostle Eric Nyamekye and his family’s first fellowship with the local church as Chairman of the Church.

Using Luke 22:7-20, Mark 14:32-36 and Luke 22:38-46 as the main Bible references for his sermon, the General Secretary explained that in fulfillment of God’s covenant with His people in the Old Testament, He often gave them signs that did not just serve as reminders for them but for Himself.

He cited the rainbow as an example of a covenant sign of God that displayed His promise to never destroy the earth with a flood (Genesis 9:12-16). This, according to him, reminded God of His promise to humankind.

He further stated that just like the rainbow, the Communion is also a covenant sign that reminds God of His promise to humankind through the blood of Jesus Christ.

“Jesus taught His disciples that His death would be the beginning of the New Covenant. The symbolism of the bread and wine was given to show that Jesus’ body and blood were necessary to institute the New Covenant,” he said.

Apostle Kumi-Larbi, however, emphasized that the first purpose for the Lord’s Supper is to serve as a personal memorial for believers.  He explained that The Church of Pentecost holds firmly to the belief that when believers partake in the Lord’s Supper they do it in remembrance of the redemption they have received in Jesus Christ.

“As a redeemed people of God, it is important for us to reflect upon the redemption that we have received in Jesus Christ. When we participate in the Holy Communion, we reflect upon His body and blood that purchased for us our salvation. That is the memorial view of communion,” he said.

The General Secretary also said that the bread and the wine that are used for the Communion symbolizes the body of Jesus Christ that was broken for believers whilst the wine represent the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed for believers for the forgiveness of sins.

He advised Christians to hold fast to the belief that they have been set apart for God Himself. All believers have been separated from sin and are now devoted to God Himself due to the atonement of sins. They should therefore not regard themselves as miserable sinners.

“We are now saints, not because our behaviour is perfect and we never make mistakes anymore, but because God now sees us as holy because of Jesus Christ. And we are part of a nation; a huge body of believers that are all working together as one in God’s service,” he said.

Apostle Kumi-Larbi therefore advised believers not to take the observance of the Holy Communion lightly or for granted but endeavour to participate in them at all times since it is an avenue to receive blessings from the Lord.

“During communion, we remember; God remembers, and we receive! This is because God remembers His promises to us, His people, and He sets these promises before us on the table,” he stated.
