Abuakwa District Donates To Kumasi Central Prisons
The Abuakwa District of The Church of Pentecost in the Ashanti Region on Christmas Day donated assorted items valued at GH₵7,000.00 to the female section of the Kumasi Central Prisons.
The gesture was part of the activities earmarked for the celebration of the Yuletide.
The items donated included 13 bags of 50Kg rice, three bags of 50Kg sugar, three maxi bags of Gari, eight packets of sanitary pads, five packets of female panties, one full bag of bathroom slippers, two boxes each of toothpastes and toothbrushes, two boxes of Alata Soap, six boxes of Key Soap, three packs of panties, three packs of toilet rolls, a box of ‘This Way’ beverage, 80 pieces of packed food, and 80 pieces of assorted drinks.
Presenting the items, the Abuakwa District Minister, Pastor Thomas Tete Asare, said the gesture was to extend the love of Christ to the inmates and give them hope.
DSP Adwoa Amofa Agyena who received the items on behalf of ADP Margaret Joyce Dangar, the officer-in-charge of the Kumasi Female Prisons, was full of praise to the Church. “Your visit and donation are timely. Indeed, we have had visits from several organizations but I must admit that yours is unique,” she said, adding, “May the Lord bless you for remembering our sisters who are in prison.”
Chief Officer Victoria Tekper, on her part, took time to correct a misconception about prisons and stated that it is a correctional centre. “They are not just in prison; it is a correction centre where all sorts of handiworks such as bead making, baking, crocheting, among others are leant. This is done to reform inmates in order for them to be useful to society,” she said.
The Mfensi District Minister, Overseer Gordon Ansah, who doubles as the Abuakwa Area Reporter, in a sermonette based on Jeremiah 17:5-8, encouraged the inmates to put their hope in Christ and see their current situation as an opportunity to build a better relationship with God.
At the time of the visit, there were 34 females in detention.
Last year, a similar gesture was extended by the Abuakwa District to the Amanfrom Camp Prisons at the cost of GH₵5,000.
