Tithing Is For The Benefit Of The Tither - Apostle Dr Lord Donkor

Date: January 11, 2018

Christians have been admonished to faithfully honour the payment of their tithes since it shows their response to God’s love and faithfulness.

The Principal of the Pentecost Bible College in Birmingham – UK, Apostle Dr Lord Elorm Donkor, said this in a presentation on “Tithing and Offering” during the ongoing 6th Ministers and Wives’ Conference of The Church of Pentecost at the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC), Gomoa Fetteh, near Kasoa on Thursday, January 11, 2018.

He stated: “Tithing is for the benefit of the tither and not the Levite or priest, the church or even God.

“It is an opportunity through which the children of God express their love for Christ (2 Corinthians 8:8, 24) so that they would receive the promised blessing (2 Peter 1: 4; Malachi 3:10).”

He stressed that tithing helps tithers to grow in faith and increase in righteousness by being obedient to God (2 Corinthians 9:10).

“When we tithe and give our offering we make a statement that we know God and recognise His ownership of our whole being including our time, money and other material possessions. Thus, we show our love for Jesus Christ by tithing rather than loving and keeping our money and other material possession,” he indicated.

He noted that humans are required to demonstrate that they are totally God’s possession by giving Him priority in all areas of their lives, including “money, work and time.”

He said by failing to pay tithes, believers bring divine displeasure on themselves, saying, “Our appropriate response to God for His covenant relationship is to give to Him what He requires of us and to have a way of doing it that is neither complicated nor unspecified.”

According to him, since God promised believers everything, “if we obey His commandments we should trust Him that He is able to give us what He promises (Matthew 6: 25-33).

He pointed out that paying tithing is a demonstration that believers can trust God fully. “Our trust in God is demonstrated in the way we are ready to give back to God what He has given to us with the hope that He will always give us what we need,” he stressed.

Explaining where and whom tithes should be paid to, Apostle Dr Lord Donkor said that tithes should be paid only within the confines of the church as the body that represents God and executes His mission on earth.

He said the church, which administers the ordinances, should be the only authoritative entity that accepts the tithes on behalf of God to do the works of God. Although the church is not the kingdom of God, it is the instrument God uses to bring about and demonstrate the kingdom on earth.

“Thus, whereas free-will offering may be given for purposes such as church projects, support for individuals or groups of people within or outside the local church, tithes must always be paid through the local church or within the denomination, ‘the store house of God’ (Malachi 3:10).

“Just as the government revenue department would not accept that one pays his/her tax to an NGO or charity organisation because the tax belongs to the government, so also is the tithes,” he stressed.

He pointed out that Jesus, who is the fulfilment of the Law, thought proper stewardship extensively in ways that supports tithing and giving of free-will offering.
