“Unlike the High Priests in the Old Testament, Jesus was sinless and didn't have to offer sacrifices for Himself, instead He could offer Himself as a sacrifice for mankind” the General Secretary of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, stated when he joined members of the Kaneshie District on May 18, 2017, for the District’s Thursday Morning Prayer Meeting dubbed “Time With Jesus.”
The weekly Morning Prayer meeting, which is being replicated at the various levels of the Church, has been instituted by the leadership of The Church of Pentecost to encourage members to engage in personal prayers and solicit divine solution to their problems. It is the hope of leadership that this intervention would help members realize the power in engaging in personal prayers instead of chasing after supposed “men of God” in search of spiritual assistance.
Speaking on the topic: “Christ, The Perfect And Superior High Priest (Mediator)” with Hebrews 7:23-8:6 and Hebrews 4:14-16 as his main bible texts, amongst other scripture references, Apostle Kumi-Larbi explained that the need for a priest came about after mankind’s disobedience to God which resulted in a break in the relationship between God and mankind.
According to him, after the unfortunate incident, human beings began to look for someone to offer up their prayers, thanksgivings, and sacrifices to God on their behalf due to the broken relationship. (Hebrews 5:1).
“After the fall, men felt that they had broken the law. The power above them had now become holier than they were, and they dared not approach Him. They craved for the intervention of someone of whom they thought would likely be more accepted than themselves.”
“Priests, therefore, served as the mediators who stood between God and man and offered sacrifices to God on behalf of mankind. They also administered other worship obligations that people feel unworthy to offer personally,” he said and added that in those times God established the priesthood in the family of Aaron; as result all the sons of Aaron were priests. (Exodus 28:1)
Apostle Kumi-Larbi further explained to the three thousand, one hundred and fifteen (3,115) congregants that holiness was one of the prime features of a priest due to the Holy nature of the Almighty God whom he is to serve. This, according to him, was portrayed in how the priests are consecrated into office (Exodus 29; Leviticus 8-9) and the special garments reserved for them, all of which are intended to demonstrate how holy they are.
“In fact, even those men of the family of Aaron who had certain physical deformities were forbidden to serve as priests (Lev. 21:16-23), because, apparently, the unblemished body of the priest was to be a visual expression of the perfection of the God whom he was serving,” he noted.
Touching on the duties of the High Priest, the General Secretary said that one of his key responsibilities was to offer a sin offering annually to atone for the sins of the whole congregation, and also for Himself (Leviticus 4:3-21). He explained that the High Priest was required to make atonement for himself because just like the other human beings He was deemed to be predisposed to sin as a result of the fall of mankind.
Apostle Kumi-Larbi stated that Jesus Christ who has been revealed as the new High Priest is perfect and therefore qualified to atone for the sins of all mankind once and for all. According to him, through Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross, mankind have now been sanctified and set apart for Him.
He said that Christians have every cause to be excited because the new High Priest, who is Jesus Christ, is not mediating on their behalf from earth, but is seated next to the Father in heaven interceding on their behalf. (1Timothy2:5)
Quoting Hebrews 8:1, Apostle Kumi-Larbi stressed that “the one priest who goes between us and God, and makes us right with God, and prays for us to God is not an ordinary, weak, sinful, dying, priest like in the Old Testament days. He is the Son of God—strong, sinless, with an indestructible life.”
Concluding his message, the General Secretary said that Jesus is the perfect mediator and is superior to all his predecessors because Jesus deals directly with God the Father, has a place of honor beside God, He is constantly with God, and He is loved and respected infinitely by God.
He also stated that Jesus is the greatest and perfect High Priest for humanity because He is sinless, does not have to make atonement for Himself, His sacrifice was “once and for all”, He is the center of the history of grace, He was appointed by a divine oath as a perfect son, and His ministry is forever.
Apostle Kumi-Larbi stated that Jesus Christ, who is the Perfect and Superior High Priest, now dwells within believers themselves and they ought not to seek God through other supposed “men of God” or “High Priests”, but urged them to rather channel their prayers and supplications through Jesus Christ and trust God to come to their aid in His own appointed time.
After the sermon, the General Secretary led the congregation in a time of prayer. In attendance were Mrs Rose Kumi-Larbi (Wife of the General Secretary), Apostle Emmanuel Achim Gyimah (Kaneshie Area Head), Pastor Isaac Ekow Eshun (Kaneshie District Pastor) and the pastorate in the Kaneshie zone.
