“You will drink from the brook and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there” (NIV)
Long before Elijah came to the scene as a prophet of God, Abraham learnt that the God of Heaven who called him out of his idolatrous family and home, is the God who provides for those who do His will. So although he had a knife, wood and fire for sacrifice, without a lamb, he could boldly tell Isaac (the lamb) that “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offerings” Genesis 22:8.
While at the brook of Kerith Ravine, Elijah was provided with a safe retreat and drinking water. But the prophet also needed food which God provided by means of the ravens, proving thereby that God cared for His servant when ordinary supplies failed.
This supernatural employment of the ravens for the purpose of sustaining Elijah really proves God’s ability to provide at all times. Although ravens are carnivorous birds, they lost their ravenous nature when commanded to fulfill the will of their Creator, who is able to make the most unlikely instruments minister to His saints.
“God commanded the ravens to feed” Elijah and all things are possible when He speaks, because He is Jehovah Jireh.
Do I do the will of God to feel totally secured that in times of acute need he will provide?
Thank you Jehovah our provider. You are the same unchanging God who provides the needs of your children. Amen.
