DO NOT CONFORM TO THE WORLD
For Reading: Romans 12:1-3
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)
Many Christians are sometimes confused about the standards they are to follow. One child was taught by his parent not to eat unwashed fruits and also clean his hands with soap before eating so as to promote his health and prevent diseases. One day, right after school he went with his friends to pluck and pick mangoes.
After picking the mangoes most of his friends started eating them, but he wanted to wash them before eating. His friends teased, mocked and laughed at him for not being ‘a guy’, since unwashed fruits will not make him sick, and with the peer pressure from his friends he ate the unwashed mangoes forgetting what his parents had told him.
In fact, the world has set its own standards, and like what the boy did, many Christians are forced to conform to the worldly standard for fear of being ridiculed, embarrassed and persecuted. However, we are told in the above scripture not to conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
We are also told in Romans 8: 29 that God foreknew and predestined us to be conformed to the image of Jesus. Hence, even though the world has its own standard and pattern, as Christians we should live our lives according to the dictates of the Holy Scriptures so as to be acceptable before God, who is our judge. We can renew our minds with the Word of God daily.
• Am I conforming to the worldly standard or God’s standard?
• Am I mocked and persecuted by the world for not following their standard?
• Do I know that there is a way that seems right in the sight of man but the end thereof is the ways of death?
God the Holy Spirit help me to live my life according to your will so as to please you always.
The world and its lustful desires will pass away, but the Word of God will endure forever.
