The Gospel Is The Only Hope For The World - Chairman

Date: August 31, 2017

“The Gospel of Jesus Christ is our only hope; it has the power to break the false philosophies of the world. There is no other hope apart from our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This was contained in a sermon delivered by the Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, during the opening session of a two-day orientation programme for newly appointed Area Heads, Travelling Secretaries and Pastors of Pentecost International Worship Centres (PIWCs) at the Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, August 30, 2017.

According to Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah, the simple gospel of Jesus Christ is so powerful to the extent that it changes and transforms lives once a person acknowledges Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal saviour. Such a person, he said, receives salvation, and the entire being of God, which is the Holy Spirit, comes to dwell in him.

“I become very disturbed when Christians wander about looking for power or help outside the simple gospel message. They do not know who is in them (Ephesians 3:14-21, Colossians 1:27). The whole God, the Almighty One is in you. Therefore, if you are a pastor or a church leader and you keep on begging for power, then you should resign" he stated.

Speaking on the topic, “God’s Treasure In Earthen Vessels” with his main text taken from 2 Corinthians 4:7, the Chairman explained that treasures are cherished and are kept at secured places so that it would not be tampered with.

He broke the passage into four parts: “the treasure,” “jar of clay (earthen vessels),” “the surpassing power” and “the manifestation of the power in us” to unveil their meanings.

Touching on the treasure, Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah explained that it is the salvation that is given to men after receiving Jesus Christ into their lives. He observed that salvation brings brighter light [God] into the heart of believers which transforms them to be identical with Christ. This, he said, brings about a total change in thought, attitudes and character in the life of the believer.

“If you are a Christian and sometimes you still yearn for the old things you used to do, then there is something wrong. Once the light comes into you, it changes you and you will no longer yearn or boast about the old things you used to do. Once you encounter God like Apostle Paul did, you become a changed person and you will consider the old things as rubbish,” he said.

He also said that the treasure is the ministry of the New Testament (2 Corinthians 3:6). He indicated that the New Testament ministry is an everlasting covenant with the Holy Spirit which gives believers direct access to the presence of the Almighty God.

“Once you have the Holy Spirit you have all that you need. So I’m worried when Christians who have the Holy Spirit in them go out for help elsewhere.

“God has married you, and that marriage is between His Son Jesus Christ and you. Rings are given to brides to seal the marriage. So God has given us His spirit (the Holy Spirit) as a seal that we are His.

“The Spirit has come to stay in us as a seal to guarantee that we are no longer ordinary persons. With the Holy Spirit in you, you will fear nothing because you have all the weapon you need to have,” he said.

Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah pointed out that once a Christian understands this point, praying becomes easy and they will not panic at all.

He concluded by saying that the treasure is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the salvation received through Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit working in us.

Taking a swipe at homosexuality, which he said is an age old problem even recorded in the Bible (1 Corinthians 6:9, Romans 1:26-32), he described homosexuals as ‘sick’ people who needed to be helped with the gospel of Christ in order to come out of this problem.

According to him, homosexuals themselves know that what they are doing is deviant. “They are suffering inwardly, that is why they want acceptance,” he added.
