Offerings were made in over 11,000 churches/assemblies of The Church of
Pentecost throughout the nation on Sunday, January 10, 2010 for distribution to
the poor and needy in the country.
The offering, which included cash in the region of hundreds of millions, as well
as material donations like clothing, toiletries and provisions, will go to the
destitute, orphans, the sick at home and hospitals and the aged, irrespective of
their religious affiliations.
Dubbed ‘We care offering,’ Sunday’s giving is the first of an annual programme
lined up by the Executive Council of the Church of Pentecost to practically
demonstrate the love of God to all men.
It is also an extension of the Yuletide message of good will towards all men and
will take place in January each year.
Speaking about the enthusiasm with which members participated in the event, the
General Secretary of the Church, Apostle Alfred Koduah, noted that it was very
encouraging, adding his hope that subsequent givings would be even more
overwhelming.
Talking to this writer, the Chairman, Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah said it is an
occasion to demonstrate one’s love to one’s neighbour by parting with precious
possessions to help others lead decent lives.
He expatiated: “If you have two television sets, you can show your love by
parting with one. You can give out clothing, furniture, books, money, anything
at all that would help make your neigbour happy in life.”
He stressed that the programmed is strictly a local affair and things collected
do not have to be taken to district or area offices of the Church before being
distributed.
“Each church or assembly should identify the needy in their vicinity and give to
them, not considering what church they attend. Even if it means giving
educational assistance, the assembly could determine what help it could give,”
the Chairman added.
